Target employers with a QA sponsorship track record
Companies that have previously filed Labor Condition Applications for Quality Assurance roles are far more likely to sponsor again. Prioritize employers with documented sponsorship history over those with no LCA filings in this function.
Understand how OPT bridges you to H-1B
Most QA intern roles lead to full-time offers under OPT. If your degree is STEM-eligible, you get up to three years of OPT work authorization, giving employers a longer runway before committing to H-1B sponsorship.
Frame your degree as meeting specialty occupation requirements
QA roles must qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B eligibility. A degree in computer science, industrial engineering, or a related technical field strengthens that argument considerably compared to a general business degree.
Raise sponsorship early, not after an offer
Asking about visa sponsorship after receiving an offer creates friction. Mention your work authorization status early in the process so employers self-select, and you avoid wasting time with companies that won't sponsor.
Look beyond large tech companies for sponsorship
Mid-size software, medical device, and manufacturing companies regularly sponsor QA roles and face less intern competition than major tech employers. Their LCA filings are publicly searchable, so you can verify sponsorship intent before applying.
Convert your internship into a full-time sponsorship path
Intern-to-full-time conversion is the most common route to H-1B sponsorship for QA roles. Demonstrating measurable impact during the internship, such as defect reduction or test coverage improvements, makes a return offer and sponsorship case much stronger.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Quality Assurance Intern role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but it depends on how the role is structured. The position must qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning it requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field such as computer science, software engineering, or industrial engineering. Generalist QA intern roles that accept any degree are less likely to meet the specialty occupation standard. Employers sponsoring interns directly for H-1B visa is rare; the more common path is OPT during the internship, followed by H-1B sponsorship at the full-time stage.
Do I need a computer science degree to get a QA intern role sponsored?
Not necessarily, but a technical degree significantly strengthens your position. Degrees in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or industrial engineering are the most commonly accepted for sponsored QA roles. Some employers accept related fields if your coursework included testing methodology, programming, or systems analysis. A degree in an unrelated field makes H-1B sponsorship harder because the employer must demonstrate the role requires that specific discipline.
How do I find Quality Assurance Intern roles that sponsor visas?
Migrate Mate is the most efficient way to find QA intern roles where employers are open to sponsoring international candidates. Filtering by sponsorship willingness saves time you'd otherwise spend applying to companies that won't support your visa status. Beyond the job board, cross-referencing employers against public Labor Condition Application data helps confirm which companies have an active history of sponsoring QA positions specifically.
What is the approval rate for H-1B petitions in Quality Assurance roles?
USCIS doesn't publish approval rates by job title, but QA roles filed under software-related SOC codes generally see approval rates consistent with other tech occupations, historically above 85% for initial petitions at cap-subject employers. The bigger risk for QA roles is a Request for Evidence challenging specialty occupation status, particularly if the job description is broad or the degree requirement isn't clearly tied to the role's core duties.
Can I use CPT during a Quality Assurance internship and still apply for OPT later?
Yes, with an important caveat. Full-time CPT used for 12 or more months makes you ineligible for OPT. Most students use part-time CPT during the academic year, which carries no OPT impact regardless of duration. If your QA internship runs full-time over summer, that single semester typically doesn't affect OPT eligibility. Confirm the terms with your Designated School Official before accepting any CPT-based internship offer.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Quality Assurance Intern jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
