How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Mechanical Engineering Intern
Target F-500 manufacturers first
Large automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing companies like Ford, Lockheed Martin, and Caterpillar have established visa sponsorship programs and regularly hire international mechanical engineering students for internships.
Emphasize specialized technical skills
Highlight experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD), finite element analysis, thermodynamics, or manufacturing processes. These specialized skills strengthen the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B petitions.
Apply for CPT authorization early
Curricular Practical Training requires your internship to be integral to your mechanical engineering curriculum. Start the CPT application process with your international student office at least 30 days before your start date.
Consider defense contractors carefully
Companies like Raytheon and Northrop Grumman offer excellent engineering experience but may require security clearances that limit opportunities for international students. Research clearance requirements before applying.
Document your engineering coursework
Keep detailed records of relevant mechanical engineering courses, labs, and projects. Employers need this documentation to demonstrate the degree requirement when filing Labor Condition Applications for visa sponsorship.
Network through engineering societies
Join ASME student chapters and attend career fairs hosted by engineering organizations. Many sponsors recruit international students specifically through these targeted engineering events and professional networks.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do mechanical engineering internships qualify for H-1B sponsorship after graduation?
Yes, mechanical engineering roles typically qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B visas since they require specific engineering knowledge and an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree. Internship experience at sponsors like Boeing or Tesla strengthens full-time H-1B applications by demonstrating the employer's ongoing need for your specialized mechanical engineering skills.
Can I use CPT for a mechanical engineering internship?
Yes, if the internship is directly related to your mechanical engineering curriculum and approved by your academic advisor. You'll need to register for internship credit or have the role count toward degree requirements. Apply for CPT authorization through your international student office at least 30 days before your start date.
What degree do I need for mechanical engineering visa sponsorship?
Most mechanical engineering roles require a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field like aerospace or manufacturing engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Some advanced positions may require additional coursework in specialized areas like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, or materials science to meet specialty occupation requirements.
Which companies sponsor mechanical engineering interns most often?
Large manufacturers and aerospace companies sponsor most frequently, including General Motors, Ford, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Tesla, and Caterpillar. These F-500 companies have established visa programs and regularly convert international interns to full-time employees with H-1B sponsorship.
Can mechanical engineering internships lead to EB-2 green cards?
Yes, mechanical engineers often qualify for EB-2 green cards through PERM labor certification, especially in advanced manufacturing or aerospace roles requiring specialized knowledge. However, you'll typically need full-time employment first, as internships don't establish the permanent position requirement for PERM applications.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Mechanical Engineering Intern jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
