How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Strategy Intern
Use CPT for consulting and strategy internships
F-1 students in MBA or business programs use Curricular Practical Training for summer strategy internships. CPT is authorized by your university — consulting firms don't need to file any visa petition for the internship itself.
Plan your OPT for post-MBA full-time conversion
After graduation, OPT gives you 12 months to work full-time. STEM-designated MBA concentrations in business analytics or quantitative strategy extend this to 36 months, giving you multiple chances at the H-1B lottery.
Target MBB and Big Four with established conversion pipelines
McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and Deloitte routinely convert strategy interns to full-time roles with H-1B sponsorship. Their dedicated immigration teams handle the process, making the intern-to-sponsored-consultant pathway well-established and predictable.
Emphasize analytical and quantitative coursework
Strategy roles require strong analytical skills. Highlight statistics, econometrics, financial modeling, and data analysis coursework that demonstrates the specialized knowledge supporting both your candidacy now and future H-1B qualification.
Network with international alumni in consulting
Connect with alumni who went through the CPT-to-OPT-to-H-1B path at strategy firms. They can provide referrals and insights into which firms actively support international candidates through each stage of the visa process.
Consider boutique strategy firms for faster decisions
Smaller strategy consulting firms often move faster on hiring and may be more flexible with timing. They hire international students on CPT for internships and sponsor qualified candidates for full-time roles after graduation.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do strategy intern positions qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, strategy intern roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship because they require specialized business knowledge and analytical skills. The position must require a bachelor's degree in business, economics, or related field, and involve strategic analysis work that meets specialty occupation requirements.
What degree do I need for visa sponsorship in strategy roles?
Most strategy positions require a bachelor's degree in business administration, economics, finance, mathematics, or related analytical field. MBA candidates are particularly competitive for strategy consulting roles, as these programs directly align with the strategic analysis and business case development work required.
Which companies sponsor strategy interns for work visas?
Major consulting firms like McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, and PwC regularly sponsor strategy interns. Technology companies including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon also sponsor strategy roles within their corporate development teams. Many Fortune 500 companies sponsor strategy positions in their corporate strategy departments.
How competitive is H-1B approval for strategy positions?
Strategy roles generally have strong H-1B approval rates because they clearly require specialized business knowledge and analytical skills. The key is demonstrating that your degree directly relates to strategic analysis, financial modeling, and business case development work that the role requires.
Can I get sponsored as a strategy intern without an MBA?
Yes, many companies sponsor strategy interns with bachelor's degrees in business, economics, or related fields. However, MBA programs provide stronger pathways to top-tier consulting firms and often have dedicated recruitment relationships that increase sponsorship likelihood for international students.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Strategy Intern jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
