How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Rehabilitation Psychologist
Emphasize your doctoral psychology degree
USCIS requires clear documentation that your Ph.D. or Psy.D. directly relates to rehabilitation psychology practice. Include transcripts showing coursework in neuropsychology, disability studies, and rehabilitation methods.
Document your clinical supervision hours
Most rehabilitation psychology positions require supervised clinical experience. Compile detailed records of your practicum hours, internship rotations, and any postdoctoral fellowship training in rehabilitation settings.
Highlight specialized assessment skills
Rehabilitation psychologists conduct neuropsychological assessments and functional capacity evaluations. Demonstrate proficiency with standardized testing instruments and evidence-based assessment protocols for disability populations.
Target healthcare systems and rehabilitation hospitals
Large healthcare networks, academic medical centers, and specialized rehabilitation facilities are most likely to sponsor visas. These employers understand the specialized nature of rehabilitation psychology roles.
Understand state licensing requirements early
Psychology licensing varies significantly by state and can affect visa applications. Research licensing requirements in your target state and begin the application process before your visa interview.
Prepare for specialty occupation documentation
Collect evidence that your specific role requires doctoral-level psychology training. Job descriptions should specify degree requirements and demonstrate the complexity of rehabilitation psychology interventions you'll provide.

Does rehabilitation psychology qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
Yes, rehabilitation psychology typically qualifies since it requires a doctoral degree in psychology plus specialized clinical training. The role involves complex psychological assessment and intervention that demands advanced education. USCIS generally approves these petitions when the job description clearly specifies doctoral-level requirements and specialized rehabilitation psychology duties.
What degree do I need for visa sponsorship as a rehabilitation psychologist?
You need a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology, preferably with specialized training in rehabilitation psychology. Some positions may accept a doctoral degree in clinical psychology with postdoctoral rehabilitation training. The degree must be from an APA-accredited program, and you'll need to document how your coursework relates to rehabilitation psychology practice.
Which visa types work best for rehabilitation psychologists?
H-1B is the most common path, though processing times and lottery odds apply. O-1 may be possible if you have extraordinary achievements in rehabilitation psychology research or clinical innovation. J-1 exchange visitor programs exist for psychology training, but most lead to two-year home residency requirements unless you qualify for a waiver.
Do I need psychology licensure before applying for work visa sponsorship?
Not necessarily before the visa application, but most employers require you to be license-eligible and commit to obtaining licensure quickly after arrival. Some states allow provisional practice while pursuing full licensure. Employers may sponsor your visa while you complete licensing requirements, but this should be clearly outlined in your employment agreement.
What if my psychology degree is from outside the United States?
Foreign psychology degrees need credential evaluation to confirm U.S. equivalency. You'll likely need APA recognition or evaluation from organizations like WES or ECE. Some states require additional coursework or supervised hours to meet U.S. licensing standards. Start the credential evaluation process early, as it can take several months to complete all requirements.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Rehabilitation Psychologist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
