Target corporate restaurant chains over independent restaurants
Large chains like McDonald's, Starbucks, and Chipotle have established visa sponsorship processes and legal teams familiar with H-1B requirements for management positions.
Emphasize business management and analytics skills
Frame your role around data analysis, financial planning, operations optimization, and staff training rather than general restaurant supervision to meet specialty occupation requirements.
Look for regional or district management tracks
Multi-location management roles often require business degrees and involve strategic planning, making them more likely to qualify for H-1B specialty occupation standards.
Consider food service technology companies
Restaurant software companies, delivery platforms, and food tech startups often need managers with restaurant experience for client success and operations roles.
Highlight any hospitality management degree or certification
Business administration, hospitality management, or food service management degrees strengthen your case that the position requires specialized knowledge and education.
Apply during slower H-1B periods if possible
Restaurant management roles face higher scrutiny during peak filing seasons. Consider timing applications when USCIS has more bandwidth to review borderline cases.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do restaurant assistant manager jobs qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Most restaurant assistant manager positions don't qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship because they're considered general management roles that don't require a specialized bachelor's degree. However, positions with large chains that emphasize business analytics, supply chain management, or corporate training may qualify if the job requires specific business education and involves strategic decision-making.
What degree do I need for restaurant management visa sponsorship?
Business administration, hospitality management, or restaurant/food service management degrees provide the strongest foundation for H-1B eligibility. The key is demonstrating that your degree directly relates to the specialized knowledge required for the position, such as operations analysis, financial planning, or multi-unit management strategies.
Which restaurant companies sponsor work visas?
Large corporate chains like McDonald's, Yum Brands, Starbucks, and major hotel restaurant operations are more likely to sponsor visas than independent restaurants. These companies have established legal processes and often need managers for corporate roles, regional oversight, or specialized training programs that may qualify for H-1B sponsorship.
How can I make my restaurant manager role qualify for H-1B?
Focus on duties requiring specialized business knowledge: financial analysis, inventory optimization, staff training program development, multi-location oversight, or franchise operations. The position must require a specific degree and involve complex decision-making beyond general restaurant supervision. Document how your degree directly applies to these specialized functions.
What are approval rates for restaurant management H-1B petitions?
Restaurant management H-1B petitions face higher denial rates than technical roles due to specialty occupation challenges. USCIS often questions whether the position requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Success rates improve significantly for corporate roles with clear business management requirements and well-documented degree-job relationships.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Restaurant Assistant Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
