How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Security Project Manager
Frame your role as a specialty occupation
H-1B approval for Security Project Managers depends on demonstrating the position requires a specialized degree, typically in cybersecurity, information systems, or engineering. Highlight the technical depth of your work, not just the management responsibilities.
Target employers with active security programs
Defense contractors, financial institutions, healthcare systems, and large tech firms run ongoing security initiatives that justify dedicated project management roles. These employers have established H-1B sponsorship processes and sponsor this title with regularity.
Obtain relevant certifications before applying
PMP, CISSP, CISM, or CompTIA Security+ credentials signal to both employers and USCIS that your role requires specialized knowledge. Certifications also strengthen the specialty occupation argument during the petition review process.
Clarify the technical scope in your resume
Sponsorship decisions often hinge on how technical the role appears. Emphasize security architecture reviews, risk assessments, and compliance frameworks like NIST or ISO 27001 rather than generic project delivery language that could apply to any PM.
Ask about sponsorship before the offer stage
Raise the visa question during the second or third interview, after demonstrating your value. Asking too early can screen you out before they know what you bring. Asking too late wastes both sides' time if the employer has a hard no-sponsorship policy.
Use Migrate Mate to find pre-screened openings
Migrate Mate lists Security Project Manager roles from employers already willing to sponsor. Filtering by sponsorship eligibility upfront saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations late in the process.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can a Security Project Manager get H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, though the petition needs to clearly establish the role as a specialty occupation. USCIS scrutinizes project management titles more carefully than purely technical roles, so the job description must emphasize the specialized degree requirement, such as cybersecurity, computer science, or information systems, and the technical nature of the daily work rather than general oversight duties.
What degree do I need for a sponsored Security Project Manager role?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, information systems, computer science, or engineering. Some accept a business degree if it's paired with substantial security-focused certifications like CISSP or CISM. A degree in an unrelated field weakens the specialty occupation argument and may trigger a Request for Evidence from USCIS.
Do defense contractors sponsor Security Project Managers?
Many do, but there's an important complication: roles supporting classified government contracts often require a U.S. security clearance, which is unavailable to non-citizens. However, defense contractors also run unclassified commercial and infrastructure security programs that don't require clearance, and those positions are frequently sponsored. It's worth asking specifically whether the role requires clearance during the interview.
How long does H-1B sponsorship take for this role?
Standard H-1B processing through the annual lottery takes roughly 6 to 12 months from registration to approval, including the cap-subject lottery in March and a petition filing window starting April 1. Premium processing reduces USCIS adjudication to 15 business days once a petition is filed, but lottery selection still determines whether you can file at all.
Where can I find Security Project Manager jobs that sponsor visas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. Every listed role is from an employer willing to sponsor, so you're not wasting applications on companies that won't consider visa holders. You can filter by job title and review sponsorship details before applying, which is particularly useful for a title like Security Project Manager where sponsorship willingness varies significantly by employer type.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Security Project Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
