Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Specialty Cook
Document your culinary specialization clearly
Emphasize specific regional cuisines, advanced techniques, or cultural knowledge that requires specialized training. Generic cooking experience won't qualify for H-1B sponsorship.
Target authentic cuisine restaurants
Restaurants serving authentic regional dishes often need specialty cooks with cultural knowledge. These employers understand the specialized skills required and justify sponsorship needs.
Highlight formal culinary education
Culinary degrees, specialized certifications, or formal apprenticeships strengthen your H-1B case by demonstrating the specialized knowledge required for the role beyond basic cooking.
Focus on upscale dining establishments
Fine dining restaurants, luxury hotels, and high-end catering companies are more likely to sponsor visas for specialty cooks who bring advanced culinary expertise.
Prepare detailed job description with employer
Work with employers to craft detailed job descriptions emphasizing specialized techniques, cultural knowledge, and advanced skills that distinguish your role from standard cooking positions.
Consider chef career progression path
Many specialty cooks advance to sous chef or head chef roles, which have stronger H-1B approval rates due to clearer management and specialized responsibilities.

Find Specialty Cook JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do specialty cooks qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, but only when the role requires specialized culinary knowledge, formal training, or cultural expertise beyond basic cooking skills. The position must demonstrate specialty occupation requirements, typically involving regional cuisine expertise, advanced techniques, or management responsibilities that require specialized education or equivalent experience.
How to find Specialty Cook jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Specialty Cook jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international candidates with sponsoring employers. Focus your search on restaurants, hotels, resorts, and catering companies that frequently hire skilled culinary professionals. These positions typically qualify for H-1B, O-1, or EB-3 visas depending on your experience level and specialization in ethnic cuisines or advanced cooking techniques.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a specialty cook?
A bachelor's degree in culinary arts, hospitality management, or related field strengthens your case significantly. Without a degree, you need extensive specialized experience demonstrating advanced culinary knowledge. Three years of specialized experience can substitute for one year of education under H-1B requirements.
Which employers sponsor specialty cooks for H-1B visas?
Upscale restaurants specializing in authentic regional cuisines, luxury hotels, fine dining establishments, and high-end catering companies most commonly sponsor specialty cooks. These employers can justify the specialized knowledge requirement and afford the H-1B filing costs and legal fees involved.
Are H-1B approval rates good for specialty cook positions?
Approval rates vary significantly based on job description specificity and employer justification. Positions emphasizing advanced techniques, cultural knowledge, or supervisory responsibilities have better chances than generic cooking roles. USCIS scrutinizes whether the role truly requires specialized knowledge beyond standard cooking skills.
Can I get an H-1B as a specialty cook without restaurant experience?
Yes, if you have formal culinary education and can demonstrate specialized knowledge relevant to the position. Culinary school graduates with expertise in specific cuisines, techniques, or food science can qualify even without extensive restaurant experience, especially for positions requiring cultural authenticity or advanced culinary knowledge.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Specialty Cook jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
