INTRODUCTION
The primary role of the Staff Psychiatrist is to provide direct psychiatric assessment/ consultation and psychiatry medication management to patients who have been referred for the treatment of trauma-related disorders and related symptoms (e.g., sleep disturbance). Additionally, patients may need support for pre-existing psychiatric disorders such as recurrent major depression, bipolar disorder or substance use disorder. Approximately 1/3 of TRC-RTC patients accept or request referral to psychiatric care, with needs ranging from support for insomnia to complex pharmacology for those with co-morbid diagnoses. Working with TRC-RTC therapist colleagues, the staff psychiatrist will support screening for SUD and offer MAT for those whose use interferes with recovery from trauma.

Consider underserved area positions for EB-2 NIW eligibility
Staff psychiatrist roles in underserved communities or rural areas strengthen national interest waiver arguments, potentially bypassing the PERM labor certification requirement for green cards.
Verify state medical license requirements early
Each state has different medical licensing requirements for foreign-trained physicians. Confirm USMLE completion, residency recognition, and any additional state-specific requirements before applying.
Explore academic medical center opportunities
University hospitals and academic medical centers often have dedicated immigration support for physician recruitment and may offer cap-exempt H-1B positions through university affiliations.

Find Staff Psychiatrist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do staff psychiatrists qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, staff psychiatrist positions consistently qualify for H-1B visas as specialty occupations requiring a medical degree. You'll need a medical degree, completed residency training in psychiatry, and state medical licensure. USCIS approval rates for physician H-1B petitions are typically high due to clear specialty occupation requirements.
Can foreign medical graduates work as staff psychiatrists in the U.S.?
Yes, but you must complete USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3, finish a U.S. psychiatry residency program, and obtain state medical licensure. Most foreign medical graduates enter through J-1 visas for residency, then transition to H-1B or apply for green cards through EB-2 NIW or PERM processes.
What visa options work best for staff psychiatrist positions?
H-1B visas work well for employed positions, while EB-2 NIW offers a direct path to permanent residence, especially for psychiatrists working in underserved areas. O-1 visas suit psychiatrists with significant research achievements or clinical innovations. Academic positions may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B status.
How to find Staff Psychiatrist jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Staff Psychiatrist jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international healthcare professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on hospitals, mental health facilities, correctional institutions, and university medical centers that commonly sponsor H-1B, O-1, and other work visas for psychiatrists. These organizations often face staffing shortages and actively recruit internationally licensed psychiatrists.
Do I need a psychiatry residency completed in the U.S.?
Yes, most states require completion of an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency program in the United States for medical licensure. Foreign psychiatry training alone typically doesn't qualify for state licensing. You'll need to match into a U.S. residency program, usually through the J-1 visa pathway.
How does J-1 waiver status affect staff psychiatrist sponsorship?
J-1 waiver physicians can transition to H-1B or permanent residence after completing their waiver obligations, typically three years in an underserved area. Many hospitals that employ J-1 waiver psychiatrists are experienced with immigration processes and may sponsor H-1B or green card applications after the waiver period ends.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Staff Psychiatrist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
