Leverage your fellowship training
Surgical oncology fellowships create a clear specialty occupation case. USCIS recognizes the specialized knowledge required for complex cancer surgeries, making H-1B approvals highly likely with proper documentation.
Document your subspecialization
Whether you focus on hepatobiliary, thoracic, or pediatric oncology, emphasize your subspecialty training. Narrow expertise strengthens the case that no U.S. worker can easily fill the position.
Prepare for medical licensing requirements
State medical licenses are mandatory before starting work. Begin the application process early, as some states require ECFMG certification or additional documentation that can delay visa processing.
Plan around residency status
J-1 physicians often face two-year home residency requirements. Confirm your waiver eligibility before accepting positions, as this affects both timing and visa pathway options significantly.

Find Surgical Oncologist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do surgical oncologists qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, surgical oncologists easily qualify for H-1B visas as the role requires specialized medical training, board certification, and fellowship completion that clearly meets specialty occupation requirements. Medical degrees combined with surgical oncology fellowships provide the specialized knowledge USCIS looks for in H-1B petitions.
What degree requirements apply for surgical oncology sponsorship?
You need a medical degree (MD or equivalent) plus completion of a surgical oncology fellowship. Foreign medical degrees are acceptable if accompanied by ECFMG certification. The combination of medical school and subspecialty fellowship training satisfies all H-1B and EB-2 educational requirements.
How do medical licensing requirements affect visa timing?
You cannot begin work until you obtain state medical licensure, which can take 2-4 months depending on the state. Some employers will sponsor your visa while you're completing licensing requirements, but the start date must align with license approval to maintain legal status.
How to find Surgical Oncologist jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Surgical Oncologist jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international medical professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on major hospital systems, cancer centers, and academic medical institutions that commonly sponsor H-1B, O-1, and EB-2 visas for specialized physicians. These healthcare organizations frequently need experienced surgical oncologists and have established visa sponsorship processes.
Are surgical oncology H-1B applications likely to be approved?
Surgical oncology H-1B petitions have high approval rates because the role clearly requires specialized knowledge that only fellowship-trained physicians possess. The specialized nature of cancer surgery, combined with fellowship requirements, makes these cases straightforward for USCIS adjudicators to approve.
Can surgical oncologists get green cards faster than other specialties?
Yes, through the National Interest Waiver (NIW) pathway under EB-2. Surgical oncologists can argue their work benefits U.S. public health by treating cancer patients. This bypasses labor certification requirements and can be significantly faster than standard EB-2 processing, especially with compelling case preparation.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Surgical Oncologist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
