Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Jobs in Missouri: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Missouri?
The standard path in Missouri is to earn a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or a closely related counseling field, then obtain licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor through the Missouri State Committee of Psychologists and Counselors. Most Missouri employers also expect or strongly prefer the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential, awarded by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification after passing a national exam. Graduates should complete any required supervised hours and apply directly to the Missouri Division of Vocational Rehabilitation or community partners.
Which companies hire vocational rehabilitation counselors in Missouri?
Missouri vocational rehabilitation counselor roles are posted by State of Missouri, Mercy Rehabilitation Hospitals, and Lifepoint Health and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Missouri's largest sustained employer in this field is the state-run Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, which operates district offices across the state and regularly recruits counselors for both urban centers and rural regions.
Which Missouri cities have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs?
St. Louis, Springfield, and Kansas City lead Missouri for vocational rehabilitation counselor openings, driven by the concentration of large hospital systems, community mental health centers, and state agency district offices in those metros. Smaller markets like Springfield benefit from regional anchors such as Burrell Behavioral Health and Ozarks Technical Community College's disability services programs, which sustain consistent hiring even outside the two largest cities.
Are there remote vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Missouri?
Yes, but they're limited, because the role is fundamentally relationship-based and often requires in-person assessments, job site visits, and coordination with community partners. About 0% of vocational rehabilitation counselor openings tied to Missouri are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting selective flexibility rather than broad availability. The parts of the work most suited to remote delivery are intake interviews, documentation, and career planning sessions that do not require on-site observation.
How can I get hired as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Missouri with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a counselor trainee or rehabilitation specialist I position with the Missouri Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, which hires candidates still completing their master's degree or who hold a related bachelor's degree and relevant volunteer experience. Community mental health centers such as Burrell Behavioral Health and places like Preferred Family Healthcare offer case manager and employment specialist roles that serve as a practical bridge into full rehabilitation counseling. Completing a graduate practicum or internship with a Missouri DVR district office substantially strengthens an application, and beginning the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor exam process signals long-term commitment to Missouri hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Missouri?
You can find and apply to vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Missouri on Migrate Mate, which lists current Missouri openings from state agencies, nonprofit organizations, healthcare systems, and community providers.
