Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Texas?
Most Texas employers require a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or a related field, and the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential issued by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification is the standard professional credential recognized across the state. Texas does not issue its own state license specifically for rehabilitation counselors, so the CRC functions as the de facto qualification. Candidates typically complete a supervised internship as part of their graduate program before sitting for the CRC exam.
Which companies hire vocational rehabilitation counselors in Texas?
Texas vocational rehabilitation counselor roles are posted by Nexion Health, HCA Houston Healthcare, and Texas Health and Human Services Commission and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Texas's large Veterans Affairs network, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, and nonprofit disability service organizations are among the most consistent sources of openings in the state.
Which Texas cities have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs?
Austin, Houston, and San Antonio have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth drive the majority of demand through their large Veterans Affairs medical centers, major hospital rehabilitation systems, and state agency regional offices, while San Antonio's substantial military and veterans population sustains steady hiring at both federal and nonprofit employers.
Are there remote vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're limited, since vocational rehabilitation counseling typically involves in-person client assessments, job site visits, and coordination with community providers. About 11% of vocational rehabilitation counselor openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that some administrative case management and benefits counseling functions can be handled at a distance. Roles focused on documentation, employer outreach, and benefits analysis are the most likely to offer flexible arrangements.
How can I get hired as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a position as a vocational rehabilitation counselor trainee or rehabilitation technician within the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, which regularly recruits candidates who are still completing their master's degree or who hold a bachelor's in a related field. Large Texas systems like TIRR Memorial Hermann and the VA also bring in practicum students and post-graduate interns who often convert to full roles. Earning the CRC credential early, even provisionally, and gaining caseload experience through a graduate internship gives candidates a clear edge over applicants without documented client contact hours.
Where can I find and apply to vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Texas?
