The selected candidate will serve as Deputy Program Manager (DPM) for the NNSA-sponsored Space- based Nuclear Detonation Detection (SNDD) Program, a $70-90M/annual enterprise whose goal is to detect, locate, and report nuclear detonations in the Earth's atmosphere or near space in near real-time. The Program consists of space payloads deployed for electro-magnetic pulse, radiation, and space environment measurement, as well as data processing and physics-based analysis and interpretation systems. The DPM supports the Program Manager, who is responsible for the overall management of the SNDD Program. The DPM is a member of the SNDD Program leadership team that plans, tracks, manages, and reports on the SNDD portfolio to the NNSA sponsor, the LANL Nuclear Nonproliferation and Security (NNS) program office, and LANL's Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division, which executes a majority of work performed for the SNDD Program. The DPM also helps the PM to coordinate SNDD activities within the broader LANL United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System (USNDS) portfolio, which also includes activities funded by the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) and Space Systems Command (SSC). The position is funded at 100%, with an expectation that the selected candidate will serve at least 75% of their time in this role and will have specific management responsibilities for a large portion of the portfolio.
Specific duties include:
- Under the direction of the PM, coordinate planning and development activities between Los Alamos, government agencies, other laboratories, and industry. This includes working with internal and external stakeholders to turn the SNDD program vision into an executable plan, and ensuring the plan is successfully realized.
- Coordinate disparate capabilities and needs across the program to ensure that they are eReffectively communicated and utilized to meet sponsor and stakeholder needs within schedule and budget constraints. This includes working closely with scientific and technical staff to effectively communicate opportunities, set priorities, and persistently manage progress.
- Support program-level activities and coordination as needed, requiring maintaining awareness of all high-level program activities, directions, and initiatives across the various payload development, integration and operations support; technology development and crosscutting activities.
- Work closely with one or more external SNDD stakeholder agencies to effectively and persistently understand stakeholder needs and opportunities, and jointly develop Los Alamos capabilities to meet these. This includes effectively representing program-wide interests with the stakeholders to promote multi-agency coordination and collaboration. Develop methods for both tracking and resolving technical risks to support technical teams involved in high stress time sensitive troubleshooting of space flight payloads.
- Work with Los Alamos program, line, and project leadership to ensure that program execution is consistent with sponsor and stakeholder needs and constraints such as budget and schedule, and communicate progress, status, and issues back to sponsors and stakeholders.
- Broadly represent Los Alamos and support the SNDD program manager for specific areas of responsibility, as well as national activities and events as needed.
- Present results to peers, customers, and management in formal and informal settings.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Two or more years of experience leading the development of remote sensing instrumentation and/or sensor data processing systems, or production of space hardware, as the project or technical lead, including use of associated project management standards, tools, and techniques.
- Expert-level knowledge of at least one of the following relevant technical areas: nuclear weapons outputs or effects; electromagnetic, radiation, and/or particle sensing systems; sensor data processing systems; or systems engineering for space systems.
- Demonstrated ability to rapidly identify, and successfully adapt to, changing priorities, constraints, conditions, and problems.
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, including the ability to effectively communicate complex technical issues to non- technical stakeholders and collaborators.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to lead and influence peers within the context of diverse collaborations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance and an SCI clearance which may require a polygraph test.
- Due to the nature of the work, this is a fully onsite position without the possibility of remote work. The selected applicant must be able to travel up to 25% to support the mission with the remainder of the time spent fully onsite at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

- Experience using DoD, NASA, or similar standards and processes for the development, realization, and operation of space-based instrumentation.
- Experience establishing subcontracts and managing procurements.

Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
