- Improve model and agent performance through prompt engineering, context engineering, retrieval, fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, tool-use design, and agent harness engineering.
- Build high-quality training and evaluation data pipelines for software engineering tasks, including data collection, filtering, synthesis, labeling, and hard-example mining.
- Explore and apply advances in large language models, code intelligence, program analysis, reinforcement learning, and autonomous software engineering to real-world developer productivity problems at scale.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant industry or research experience in machine learning, large language models, code intelligence, AI-powered developer tools, or related areas.
- Strong programming skills in one or more languages such as Python, Go, Java, C++, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, machine learning, operating systems, databases, and fundamental system design principles.
- Experience owning complex machine learning projects end-to-end, from problem formulation and data construction to model development, evaluation, deployment, and production iteration.
- Strong system design and engineering skills, with experience building scalable, reliable, and efficient machine learning systems or AI-powered applications.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to drive complex technical projects across teams.
- Experience building or leading AI systems for software engineering, including code generation, coding agents, unit test generation, debugging, or code review.
- Deep experience with large language models and one or more model improvement or post-training techniques, such as supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, preference optimization, prompt engineering, context engineering, retrieval, or model evaluation.
- Experience designing and improving agentic systems, including tool-using LLMs, coding agents, agent harnesses, MCP, agent skills, planning, memory, or multi-step execution workflows.
- Experience building large-scale training data, evaluation datasets, benchmarks, or experimentation pipelines for machine learning or code intelligence systems.
- Strong understanding of software engineering and code intelligence techniques such as program analysis, compilers, static analysis, code search, repository indexing, testing, and debugging.
- Publications, patents, open-source contributions, or demonstrated technical leadership in machine learning, large language models, code intelligence, developer tools, or AI for software engineering.

AI Developer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ai developer in California?
Becoming an ai developer in California typically begins with a bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field, though many roles also accept demonstrated project experience in lieu of advanced credentials. California does not require a state-issued license to practice as an ai developer. Most California employers expect candidates to show a portfolio of machine learning projects, contributions to open-source repositories, or graduate-level coursework in artificial intelligence, neural networks, or natural language processing.
How much do AI developers make in California?
AI developers in California earn a median of about $174,410 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $105,060 for the lowest 10% to over $272,670 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ai developers in California?
California ai developer roles are posted by Google, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Innovaccer and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's concentration of major technology headquarters, enterprise software companies, and AI-native startups makes it one of the deepest hiring markets for this role in the country.
Which California cities have the most ai developer jobs?
San Francisco, Sunnyvale, and San Diego account for the largest share of ai developer openings in California. The San Francisco Bay Area leads because of its dense cluster of technology headquarters and AI-focused startups, while Los Angeles draws demand from entertainment technology, aerospace, and a growing enterprise software sector, and San Diego's openings are largely tied to defense contractors and biotech firms investing in AI-driven research.
Are there remote ai developer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 40% of ai developer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the work translates to distributed teams. The roles most consistently offered remotely are those centered on model development, research, and data pipeline engineering, while positions requiring close collaboration on hardware or embedded systems tend to be on-site.
How can I get hired as a ai developer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for junior machine learning engineer, AI associate, or data scientist roles at large California technology companies and enterprise software firms that run structured new-graduate programs. Employers like Google, NVIDIA, and Adobe hire through university recruiting pipelines and internship-to-full-time conversions. Building a public portfolio on GitHub with end-to-end machine learning projects and completing a graduate certificate in AI or data science from a California university system campus strengthens a candidate significantly when competing against more experienced applicants.
