Overview
This position supports the worship program in Marquand Chapel. Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Chapel, and in partnership with the Director of Chapel Music, the Chapel Manager has three major roles: service planning, logistics, and student worker management; chapel communications, and chapel facilities. The Chapel Manager will hire and manage a team of student workers each year, overseeing their work in planning and leading worship; support and coordinate a team of student chapel ministers and oversee the planning and logistics of daily Marquand Chapel worship services. The Chapel Manager will also manage, update and develop Marquand’s communications (e.g., daily worship materials, educational content, chapel announcements, and social media presence). The Chapel Coordinator will also liaise with the Associate Dean of Chapel and relevant YDS and ISM staff to coordinate day-to-day chapel scheduling and facilities maintenance. This position is grant-funded from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2028. The position is non-renewable.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Experienced Liturgist
- Cooperative and able to be flexible, able to work with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff.
- Well organized with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of relevant computer software.

- Ordination in any recognized Christian denomination.
- At least three years’ experience in church ministry.
- Working knowledge of varying denominational traditions.
- Skills in engaging the arts in worship.
- Experience with website, blog, and/or social media management skills.
Principal Responsibilities
- With the Associate Dean of Chapel and Director of Chapel Music, plan and oversee all regular chapel services and special events. Direct students in their creation and leadership of worship for Marquand Chapel. This requires knowledge and ongoing study of existing resources, and some writing ability; it also requires the ability to conceptualize and deliver liturgy in the live situation, and to instruct students in practical liturgical skills.
- With the Associate Dean of Chapel, interview and hire students to work study positions as Chapel Ministers and other support roles. Management of rotations, work schedules, and payroll for these students (15 per year).
- Liaising with the Director of Music, oversee the production of the bulletin. This involves liaising with two support staff members, whose work includes (but is not exclusive to) working for the Marquand Chapel team.
- Train the student team in good leadership of worship and serve as supervisor throughout the year to ensure quality and cooperation.
- In collaboration with student leaders, oversee the recruitment and enabling of other volunteers from the worshiping community for regular participation in chapel services.
- Liaise with all liturgical leaders (including faculty, staff and student preachers and liturgists) in preparation of the services and the bulletin. Study the particular personality and needs of the worshipping community.
- Manage Chapel communications, with overall responsibility for a web-based journal format to publicize services and events, and document of our work. Advice and help in overseeing this project is available from our media staff at Yale Divinity School.
- Liaise with communications staff of Yale University, Yale Divinity School, and Institute of Sacred Music, to ensure continuity and connectivity with University-wide communications.
- Manage and develop our collection of resources, books, and equipment for worship. Develop new resources, research new initiatives in worship, and initiate the creation of new expressions of worship.
- Management of the Chapel calendar.
- Attend, and sometimes lead, worship preparatory meetings with Chapel staff, teams and committees.
- Attend daily worship services.
- Furnish and maintain chapel liturgical resources (e.g. prayer collections, denominational service books) and liaise with the library staff. Select or create liturgical materials (visual, poetic, dramatic, etc.) and oversee the management of catalogues and databases, copyright licenses and permission.
- Manage arrangements for visiting speakers and liturgists, liaising with administrative support staff on budgets, hiring, and payroll.
- Hire and manage a team of students to set up/move Chapel furniture daily, and oversee the maintenance and repair of Chapel equipment.
- Keep current with internal and university systems by attending training sessions when needed.
- Organize liturgy for two weeks of summer worship conferences.
- Cover ministerial duties for Battell Chapel during the summer months.
- Other related duties as needed.
Required Education and Experience
- Master of Divinity, or equivalent degree.
- Knowledge of worship practices music from a diverse range of Christian worship traditions.
- Demonstrated ability in writing and communications.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- M.Div or equivalent ministerial degree.
- (If appropriate) documents pertaining to Ordination in a recognized Christian denomination.
Physical Requirements
Ability to move and arrange chapel furniture, in coordination with other students, staff and presenters.
