Application Development Manager Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a application development manager in Illinois?
The path to an application development manager role in Illinois typically starts with a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or information systems, followed by several years of hands-on development work. Illinois does not require a state-issued license for this role. Employers across Chicago's technology and financial sectors expect candidates to progress from senior developer or technical lead positions, often supplemented by a PMP certification or Scrum Master credential before stepping into full management.
How much do application development managers make in Illinois?
Application development managers in Illinois earn a median of about $171,730 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $105,350 for the lowest 10% to over $273,500 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire application development managers in Illinois?
Employers hiring application development managers in Illinois right now include Genpact, FHLBank Chicago, and Shure, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's concentration of financial services firms, large insurers, and enterprise software companies in the Chicago metro keeps demand for this role steady throughout the year.
Which Illinois cities have the most application development manager jobs?
Chicago, Antioch, and Niles have the most application development manager openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the majority of demand through its dense cluster of financial institutions, consulting firms, and healthcare systems, while Naperville and Schaumburg contribute meaningfully because of the large corporate and technology campuses that anchor the I-88 corridor west of the city.
Are there remote application development manager jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. Application development management is largely desk-based and collaboration-tool driven, making it well suited to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 57% of application development manager openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting a broad employer comfort with distributed teams. Strategic planning, sprint reviews, and stakeholder reporting are the functions most consistently done remotely.
How can I get hired as a application development manager in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a team lead or technical project coordinator role first, then building toward management. Large Illinois employers in financial services and healthcare IT, including firms headquartered along the Chicago Loop and the suburban tech corridor, regularly hire associate project managers and Agile coordinators who transition from senior developer positions. Earning a Certified Scrum Master or PMP credential before applying signals management readiness and meaningfully improves candidacy when direct management experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to application development manager jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to application development manager jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match.
