JOB SUMMARY
We’re hiring an Application Development Manager to lead a team responsible for enhancing, supporting, and gradually modernizing business-critical applications. This role is best suited for a strong people leader who can foster credibility and rapport, create stability, and help the team deliver reliably in a diverse IT ecosystem.
You’ll balance feature delivery, production support, and incremental modernization of legacy applications—while strengthening team routines, communication, and execution.
PRIMARY FOCUS: LEADERSHIP
- Guide and assist a team of approximately five developers and one customer representative by fostering transparency, coaching, prioritizing tasks, providing feedback, and supporting career growth and objectives.
- Build confidence and trust through consistent leadership, clear expectations, and a steady operating rhythm.
- Set priorities and manage tradeoffs between planned work (features/modernization) and unplanned work (production issues, urgent requests).
- Improve execution and transparency with clear status reporting, early risk escalation, and dependency management.
- Partner with stakeholders in the department, across IT and the business to align scope, timelines, and outcomes.
TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE
- Guide work across legacy applications and modern engineering practices, focusing on steady improvement over “big bang” change.
- Encourage a quality-focused SDLC (clear requirements, testing discipline, release readiness, and production support practices).
- Promote a DevOps mindset—automation, repeatability, and continuous improvement—within our IT ecosystem.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Level II: 4 years experience in an IT environment, including 1 year in a supervisory role or 1 year as a Program Manager I.
- Proven experience leading software development teams, including coaching, accountability, and building a healthy culture.
- Solid background in application development and delivering enhancements in a structured SDLC environment.
- Experience working with production systems (support, reliability, incident response, and prioritizing critical work).
- Strong communication skills—able to provide accurate, timely status, raise risks early, and drive alignment.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Experience modernizing or refactoring legacy applications to reduce operational risk and technical debt.
- Exposure to DevOps practices (CI/CD concepts, automated testing, quality checks, security scanning, etc.).
- Familiarity working in a Microsoft enterprise environment (tools/platforms commonly used across Microsoft-based development organizations).
- Multi-cloud platforms; post composition and workflow automation software; scripting (Python, PowerShell, JavaScript, Bash, VB); print languages (PLC 5/6, LCDS/Metacode, PDL, AFP, PostScript, PDF, etc.); familiarity with Content Manager or FileNet; ServiceNow.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Tips for Your Application Development Manager Job Search
Quantify delivery outcomes on your resume
Hiring managers for this role care about throughput and reliability. Replace vague ownership language with concrete delivery metrics: release cycle improvements, defect rate reductions, or team velocity gains. Generic responsibility statements will not distinguish you from other applicants.
Highlight your SDLC methodology depth
Postings for application development managers almost always specify Agile, SAFe, or DevOps maturity. Tailor your resume to mirror the exact methodology each employer uses, and name the frameworks you have coached teams through, not just practiced yourself.
Target openings by tech stack alignment
Filter your search by the primary stack listed in each job description, whether that is Java, .NET, Python, or cloud-native tooling. Roles aligned to your stack lead to faster interview progression and stronger technical conversations with engineering leadership.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists application development manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a cross-functional leadership example
Interviewers at this level probe how you align development teams with product, QA, and infrastructure stakeholders. Prepare a specific story where you resolved a delivery conflict across departments, naming the teams involved, the tradeoff you navigated, and the outcome.
Negotiate scope before negotiating compensation
Before accepting an offer, clarify team size, budget authority, and whether you own architecture decisions or only delivery. Misaligned scope leads to role dissatisfaction faster than compensation does, and asking these questions signals seniority to the hiring team.
Application Development Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most application development managers?
The companies hiring the most application development managers right now include Advanced Accelerator Applications Usa, Citi, and Monolithic Power Systems, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New Jersey, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially concentrated in financial services, healthcare systems, and large-scale retail technology organizations.
How many application development manager jobs are remote?
About 45% of application development manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting sustained flexibility in software-led organizations. Roles focused on enterprise SaaS delivery and cloud platform management tend to carry the highest share of remote arrangements, while on-site requirements are more common in regulated industries such as healthcare and government contracting.
How do you become an application development manager?
Most application development managers move into the role after several years as a software engineer or senior developer, then take on team lead or technical lead responsibilities. From there, demonstrating delivery ownership, cross-functional coordination, and people management in a formal lead role builds the case for a manager title. Earning a PMP, SAFe certification, or completing an MBA can accelerate the transition, particularly at larger organizations with structured promotion criteria.
Can you get hired as an application development manager with limited management experience?
Yes, candidates with strong individual-contributor backgrounds can land the role by framing project ownership, mentorship, and informal team coordination as management-adjacent experience. Targeting smaller companies or startups where the role blends hands-on coding with team oversight increases your chances. Emphasizing a specific technical specialty, such as cloud migration or DevOps transformation, can also offset a shorter formal management history in the eyes of hiring teams.
What does the application development manager interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a recruiter screen focused on team size, delivery methodology, and stack experience, followed by a hiring manager conversation that probes leadership philosophy and past project outcomes. Technical rounds often include architecture or system design discussions rather than hands-on coding. A final panel interview usually involves engineering directors, product managers, or operations stakeholders assessing cross-functional collaboration and strategic thinking.
Where can I find and apply to application development manager jobs?
You can find and apply to application development manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your stack, seniority level, and preferred location or remote arrangement, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
