Application Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a application engineer in Virginia?
Most application engineer roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in an engineering or technical discipline such as electrical engineering, computer science, or mechanical engineering. Virginia does not require a state-issued license specifically for application engineers, though roles in defense and federal contracting often require a security clearance processed through the federal government. Gaining experience through internships or co-ops with Virginia's defense contractors or technology firms is among the most direct paths into the field.
Which companies hire application engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring application engineers in Virginia right now include Molex, Workday, and TekSynap, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors, federal agencies, and enterprise technology firms creates consistent demand for application engineers with both commercial and cleared backgrounds.
Which Virginia cities have the most application engineer jobs?
Reston, Richmond, and Chantilly have the most application engineer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's density of defense contractors and federal IT firms drives the bulk of hiring, while Richmond's growing commercial technology and industrial sectors and Hampton Roads' naval and government installation base each support steady demand in their respective corridors.
Are there remote application engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, though availability varies by specialization. About 20% of application engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the mix of desk-based pre-sales and software application roles alongside on-site field and systems integration positions. Pre-sales and enterprise software application roles tend to offer the most flexibility, while field applications and hardware-adjacent positions typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a application engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a technical internship or co-op with one of Virginia's large defense or federal IT contractors, many of whom run structured early-career programs. Companies like Leidos and General Dynamics regularly recruit new graduates into associate application engineering or technical support analyst roles. Building a portfolio of lab projects, relevant certifications in platforms like AWS or Salesforce, or completing a relevant bachelor's degree co-op program strengthens a candidate's profile considerably for Virginia employers.
Where can I find and apply to application engineer jobs in Virginia?
