Position Description

The Electrical Application Engineer is responsible for providing technical and administrative support to the Applications Engineering team during the project bid process. This role is responsible for developing single-line diagrams, preparing and updating variance log sheets, managing technical review dates within the Salesforce system. The position also assists Application Engineers with other assigned tasks to support a successful technical review and post engineering checks of Medium- and Low-Voltage (MV/LV) Switchgear, Control Houses and Power Distribution Centers. The role includes structured mentoring and professional development opportunities to prepare for advancement into an Application Engineer position

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Electrical System Design and Review

• Prepare preliminary one-lines, three-lines, and control schematics in CAD software
• Review power and control systems specifications for MV/LV switchgear, metal-clad and metal-enclosed gear, control houses and Power Distribution Centers (PDC)
• Perform AC/DC load calculations for CPTs and battery backup systems
• Perform HVAC sizing calculations using provided tools
• Ensure designs meet applicable standards (UL, IEEE, NEC, etc.) and company specifications

Project Engineering and Documentation

• Analyze customer specifications against the quote/BOM to identify gaps or issues
• Prepare and update variance log sheets
• Participate in internal design review meetings to ensure readiness for manufacturing
• Review Engineering submittal and construction packages for completeness and accuracy
• Support the development of established project templates in CAD software

Technical Collaboration

• Coordinate with Application Engineers to ensure a successful technical review during the bid process
• Collaborate with Project Managers, Sourcing, and Production Engineers throughout the project lifecycle
• Attend Engineering meetings as needed to support design validation, redline reviews, or technical clarifications

Continuous Improvement

• Develop working knowledge of major OEM primary and secondary control components and their applications

• Develop in depth understanding of front elevation, section views, building layouts

• Identify opportunities for process improvements or design standardization

• Stay current with industry standards, codes, and SPS internal design practices to ensure continuous improvement and compliance

• Proactively seek mentorship and training from Sr. Application Engineers and engineering leadership to prepare for more complex and custom projects

Knowledge, Skills Abilities

Required

• Strong ability to interpret and develop electrical schematics, one-line, and three-line diagrams
• Good organizational and time management skills to support multiple projects under supervision
• Excellent documentation and collaboration skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
• Proficiency in electrical CAD software
• Demonstrated problem-solving ability in technical or project coordination issues

• Proactive mindset with ownership of assigned work and accountability for results

Preferred

• Good understanding of MV/LV metal-clad, metal-enclosed, and pad-mount switchgear design

• Experience supporting prototype builds or early-stage production launches

• Basic familiarity with SolidWorks Electrical and basic mechanical layout coordination

• Basic understanding of IEEE, UL, NEC, ANSI standards

• Experience with CRM software, BOM management, or PDM tools
• Positive attitude, adaptability, and desire for continuous improvement

Qualifications Experience

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or in an engineering-related field, along with at lease 1 to 3 years of using CAD software (preferably SolidWorks Electrical), is required. Candidates with at least 1 to 3 years of electro-mechanical engineering work experience in a production or manufacturing environment are required. Equivalent work experience of at least 3 years may also be considered.
