INTRODUCTION

Utilize evidence based practice to assist new campus nurses as they transition to independent school nursing practice. Teach, support and serve as a role model for new staff nurses to enhance the delivery of health services provided to students, improve student achievement and support the work of campuses.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Explain, demonstrate, and guide new staff to independently perform essential nursing objectives and tasks as outlined in the School Nurse Clinical Development Program, department procedures and board policy.
- Guide the performance and professional growth of new staff by mentoring best practices, serving as a role model, providing leadership and demonstrating a commitment to excellence.
- Utilize clinical competency skill checklist to communicate expectations regarding performance, policy and department procedures.
- Complete and submit visit documentation to provide job specific feedback and identify any areas of improvement.
- Support the work of campuses to provide health services in the absence of the assigned nurse.
- Serve as a certified instructor for CPR/AED courses and Texas Department of State Health Services certified trainer in vision and hearing screening.
- Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Nursing (Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Current license to practice nursing in the State of Texas as a Registered Nurse
- Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/AED
- Texas Department of State and Health certification in vision and hearing (recertification as required)
- Certified as The Border Health Office, University of Texas-Pan American, Texas Risk Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes in Children screener

Preferred:

- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or related field
- National School Nurse Certification (NCSN)

• 3-5 years directly related school nursing experience; preferred 2+ years direct pediatric nursing or community health
• Knowledge of nurse practice act, clinical skills, department procedures and related district policy
• Ability to build and establish relationships with internal team members and external departments
• Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
• Ability to effectively work in a team environment
• Ability to use a computer and other programs such as Microsoft Office and electronic health records
