How do I get a assistant project manager job in Washington?
The strongest path in Washington is targeting federal contractors and construction firms clustered in NoMa, Navy Yard, and the Capitol Hill corridor. Government-adjacent project management experience, PMP candidacy, or familiarity with federal procurement processes gives candidates a clear edge here. Consulting firms near Dupont Circle and K Street also hire steadily. Tailoring your resume to show scope management, scheduling tools like Microsoft Project, and stakeholder coordination with government clients sets you apart.
Which companies hire assistant project managers in Washington?

Washington's employer mix skews heavily toward federal contractors, infrastructure firms, and professional services organizations with significant government client bases.

Yes, though the role is moderately remote-friendly since it often involves on-site coordination, contractor oversight, and in-person client meetings. About 67% of assistant project manager openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with hybrid arrangements more common than fully remote. The analytical and documentation-heavy parts of the role, such as scheduling, reporting, and budget tracking, are most frequently done off-site.
How can I get a assistant project manager job in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Washington is through federal contractor internship programs or coordinator roles at construction management firms in the Navy Yard and Southeast waterfront districts. Earning a CAPM certification and demonstrating experience with scheduling software, meeting facilitation, or budget tracking significantly strengthens entry-level applications in this market.
