JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION IS LOCATED IN HAGERSTOWN, MD
This position is eligible for an additional sign on bonus and daily per diem.
The Assistant Nurse Manager supports the Nurse Manager in overseeing nursing services and daily clinical operations to help ensure patients receive timely, culturally competent, trauma-informed, on-site health care that meets contract requirements, applicable detention standards, community standards of care, and state licensure requirements. The role supports nursing supervision, patient screening and follow-up, sick call processes, emergency response readiness, continuity of care during transfer or release, staff training, quality improvement, risk management, and secure medical documentation practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the Nurse Manager in supervising nursing staff and day-to-day nursing operations to maintain safe, timely, and compliant patient care delivery.
- Support staffing coordination, daily assignments, and coverage planning for nursing services in line with approved staffing levels and operational needs.
- Support delivery of initial medical screening within 12 hours of patient arrival and timely referral to a qualified licensed health care practitioner when screening findings require further evaluation.
- Support completion and tracking of full health assessments within the required timeframes and ensure follow-up care for chronic medical, dental, and behavioral health conditions.
- Ensure daily patient requests for health care services are solicited, triaged, tracked, and documented through an accountable written system and within the electronic health record.
- Support delivery and coordination of emergent, urgent, acute, chronic, ambulatory, and emergency nursing care within the facility’s approved care level capabilities.
- Coordinate nursing care with physicians, advanced practice providers, behavioral health staff, dental staff, and other health professionals to revise treatment plans and support continuity of care.
- Support response to medical emergencies, including initial stabilization, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator use, emergency first aid, and safe transfer for higher-level care when required.
- Support preparation and communication of medical transfer information, including current medications, diagnoses, appointments, equipment, and precautions needed for continuity of care.
- Participate in quality improvement and risk management activities and support review of treatment progress, record quality, and adherence to clinical requirements.
- Support implementation of culturally competent and trauma-informed care practices for a diverse patient population.
- Use professional in-person, telephonic, video, or bilingual language assistance resources to support accurate, timely, and effective communication with patients at no cost to the patient.
- Maintain accurate, secure, and timely medical documentation and support use of an Office of the National Coordinator-certified electronic health record system.
- Protect patient confidentiality and restrict access to health and personal information to authorized personnel only, in accordance with applicable privacy and security requirements.
- Support identification, escalation, and contract-timed reporting of serious medical conditions, serious mental disorders or conditions, suicide precautions, and emergency off-site care.
- Support orientation, in-service education, and emergency readiness training for staff on required clinical and safety subjects.
- Participate in maintaining Basic Life Support readiness and contract-required emergency preparedness, evacuation, and life-safety training.
- Perform direct Registered Nurse duties as needed to meet patient care and operational needs.
- Complete required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Requirements/Certifications:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Maryland or the ability to obtain one.
- Experience in a detention/correctional healthcare setting preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Education Required:
- Graduate from a baccalaureate or graduate nursing program for Registered Nurses located in a State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory accredited by The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Required Attributes and Professional Qualities:
- Ability to support supervision of nursing staff and daily nursing operations.
- Ability to provide or support timely nursing assessment, triage, follow-up, and continuity of care.
- Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with internal and external care partners.
- Ability to deliver culturally competent and trauma-informed care.
- Ability to work accurately in an electronic health record and maintain secure documentation.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing.
- Ability to support effective communication with patients who have limited English proficiency through approved language assistance resources.
- Ability to support emergency response, transfer coordination, and staff readiness activities.
- Ability to participate in quality improvement and risk management activities.
Physical Requirements:
- Required to walk unaided at a normal pace for up to 5 minutes and maintain balance.
- Required to jog/fast walk up to ¼ mile.
- Requires physical exertion such as lifting objects greater than 30 pounds.
- Required to perform CPR/emergency care standing or kneeling.
- Must have the ability to assist sick, injured, or aging patients or staff exiting the building (may require lifting, dragging, wheeling, or carrying someone who weighs significantly more than self).
- Must be able to see, hear and smell with aids if necessary.
- Must be able to lift, push, or carry 30 pounds.
- Must perform the duties of my job in a stressful and often austere environment without physical limitations.
- Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time.
- Average manual dexterity for computer operation.
- Phone or computer use for extended periods of time.
Other Special Qualifications:
- Must maintain current/physical residency in the continental U.S.
- Pass a medical examination conducted by a licensed physician within 30 days prior to initial assignment.
- U.S. citizen and have resided in the U.S. for the last five years (unless abroad on official U.S. government duty).
- Successfully engage in and complete a thorough Background Investigation.
- Possess or have ability to obtain required security clearances.
- Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
