Automation Jobs in Rhode Island: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a automation in Rhode Island?
Most automation roles in Rhode Island require a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering, though associate degree holders with strong PLC and controls experience are regularly hired for technician-level positions. Rhode Island does not issue a state-specific license for automation engineers, so hiring decisions center on demonstrated technical skills and certifications from recognized bodies such as the International Society of Automation. Building hands-on experience through internships with Rhode Island manufacturers strengthens a candidate's profile considerably.
Which companies hire automations in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island automation roles are posted by WESTERLY COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION, Citizens, and CVS Health and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Rhode Island's defense manufacturing base and its cluster of precision fabrication firms mean demand stays relatively steady regardless of broader economic cycles.
Which Rhode Island cities have the most automation jobs?
Johnston, Wakefield, and Warwick account for the largest share of automation openings in Rhode Island. Providence anchors the market as the state's main commercial and industrial center, while surrounding communities like Cranston and Woonsocket draw openings from the manufacturing plants and defense contractors that have operated there for decades, making the greater Providence metro the clear hub for automation hiring statewide.
Are there remote automation jobs in Rhode Island?
Yes, but they're rare. Automation work is largely hands-on, requiring physical presence on plant floors, in equipment rooms, or at client sites, which limits remote options significantly. About 0% of automation openings tied to Rhode Island are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to involve programming, documentation, or systems design tasks that can be completed off-site between on-site project phases.
How can I get hired as a automation in Rhode Island with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an automation or controls technician role at one of Rhode Island's mid-size manufacturers, where employers routinely hire associates degree graduates from programs at New England Institute of Technology or Community College of Rhode Island. Lateral moves from electrical maintenance, industrial wiring, or machine operation roles are common entry points. Earning a Certified Automation Professional credential or completing a manufacturer-sponsored apprenticeship, such as those run through Rhode Island's MET program, can offset limited direct experience.
Where can I find and apply to automation jobs in Rhode Island?
You can find and apply to automation jobs in Rhode Island on Migrate Mate, which lists current Rhode Island openings updated in real time. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
