Tips for Your Automation Project Manager Job Search
Quantify automation outcomes on your resume
Hiring managers for this role want numbers, not duties. Replace vague statements with cycle-time reductions, cost savings, or headcount hours reclaimed. If your past projects touched PLC programming, RPA tools, or SCADA systems, name them explicitly in your bullet points.
Earn a PMP or PMI-ACP before applying
Most mid-to-senior automation project manager postings list PMP certification as a requirement, not a preference. If you lack it, prioritize the PMI-ACP as a faster path, then pursue PMP. Certifications filter out candidates at the screening stage before a human ever reads your resume.
Filter openings by the automation stack you know
Job titles vary wildly, so search by tool as well as title. Adding terms like UiPath, Siemens TIA Portal, or Ignition to your search surfaces roles your competitors miss and helps you apply only where your hands-on experience matches what the employer is actually running.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists automation project manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a technical scope narrative for interviews
Interviewers at manufacturing and IT firms often open with a deep-dive on a past project's scope, budget, and stakeholder map. Prepare one detailed example that covers how you defined automation requirements, managed vendor integration, and handled a scope change mid-project.
Negotiate start date around handoff timelines
Automation project managers are often hired to take over in-flight deployments. Ask during late-stage interviews whether the role is a backfill or a new seat, then use that answer to negotiate a start date that gives you a realistic ramp-up before the next project milestone.
Automation Project Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most automation project managers?
The companies hiring the most automation project managers right now include Siemens, BAKER, and Schneider Electric, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Illinois, and North Carolina, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Demand is concentrated in manufacturing, utilities, and enterprise IT transformation programs.
How many automation project manager jobs are remote?
About 32% of automation project manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, though the share varies by specialization. RPA and enterprise IT automation roles skew more remote, while industrial and controls-based positions in manufacturing or utilities typically require on-site presence at the plant or facility.
How do you become an automation project manager?
Start by building technical experience in a relevant discipline, such as controls engineering, IT systems, or process improvement, so you understand what you will be managing. Move into a project coordinator or associate PM role on automation initiatives, earn a PMP or similar credential, and document measurable outcomes from each deployment you lead. Progressively larger project scope and cross-functional team responsibility is what advances candidates into senior roles.
Can you get an automation project manager job with little experience?
Entry points into the role usually come through adjacent positions rather than a direct hire. Moving from a controls technician, business analyst, or junior IT PM role gives you the technical or process background employers need. Completing a recognized project management certification, contributing to a small internal automation pilot, and building a portfolio of documented project outcomes can offset limited years of formal PM experience at the associate or coordinator level.
What does the automation project manager interview process look like?
Most processes run three to four stages. A recruiter screen focuses on your PM background and tool familiarity. A technical interview or case study asks you to walk through how you would scope, plan, and manage a specific automation deployment. A panel interview with engineering, operations, and IT stakeholders tests your cross-functional communication. Final-stage conversations often include a presentation of a past project with budget, timeline, and lessons learned.
Where can I find and apply to automation project manager jobs?
You can find and apply to automation project manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your specialization and experience level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
