Automation Project Manager Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an automation project manager in Texas?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or industrial engineering combined with hands-on automation experience in a Texas industry like oil and gas, semiconductor manufacturing, or aerospace. Texas does not require a state-issued license specific to automation project management, but earning a PMP credential through the Project Management Institute and obtaining vendor certifications in platforms like Siemens, Rockwell, or Emerson significantly strengthens candidacy with Texas employers.
How much do automation project managers make in Texas?
Automation project managers in Texas earn a median of about $98,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $57,460 for the lowest 10% to over $162,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire automation project managers in Texas?
Employers hiring automation project managers in Texas right now include Apple, Audubon Companies, and Broadcom, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy, semiconductor, and advanced manufacturing operations means large facility-based employers consistently drive steady, recurring demand for this role.
Which Texas cities have the most automation project manager jobs?
Austin, Houston, and Plano have the most automation project manager openings in Texas. Houston leads due to its dense concentration of petrochemical plants, energy infrastructure firms, and large engineering contractors, while Dallas-Fort Worth draws demand from semiconductor manufacturers and logistics automation hubs, and Austin's expanding advanced manufacturing and tech-adjacent facilities generate consistent project management hiring.
Are there remote automation project manager jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based roles because automation project management typically requires on-site presence during system commissioning, vendor coordination, and facility walkthroughs. About 11% of automation project manager openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The parts of the role most suited to remote work include planning, documentation, budget tracking, and stakeholder reporting.
How can I get hired as an automation project manager in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as an automation technician, controls engineer, or project coordinator at a Texas manufacturer or energy company, then moving into project management as you accumulate system-level exposure. Large Texas employers in petrochemical and semiconductor sectors regularly hire engineers into rotational or associate project roles. Earning a CAPM certification, building a portfolio of commissioning or upgrade projects, and gaining experience with Rockwell or Siemens platforms makes the transition significantly easier.
Where can I find and apply to automation project manager jobs in Texas?
