Transportation Project Manager Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a transportation project manager in Texas?
Most transportation project managers in Texas begin with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a closely related field, then build experience on infrastructure or transit projects. Engineering-focused roles often require licensure through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers, which administers the Fundamentals of Engineering and Principles and Practice exams. A Project Management Professional credential strengthens candidacy at the senior level. TxDOT experience or familiarity with Texas design-build delivery frameworks is a consistent differentiator.
How much do transportation project managers make in Texas?
Transportation project managers in Texas earn a median of about $100,700 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,380 for the lowest 10% to over $177,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire transportation project managers in Texas?
Employers hiring transportation project managers in Texas right now include Freese and Nichols, Garver, and Westwood Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's scale of highway expansion, toll system modernization, and transit capital programs keeps a broad mix of public agencies, engineering consultants, and construction contractors actively recruiting throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most transportation project manager jobs?
Dallas, Austin, and Houston carry the highest concentration of transportation project manager openings in Texas. Houston's port infrastructure and highway interchange programs drive volume there, Dallas-Fort Worth's rapid population growth fuels continuous freeway and light rail investment, and Austin's ongoing roadway and transit expansion has made it one of the fastest-growing markets for project management talent in the state.
Are there remote transportation project manager jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Transportation project management is heavily field-oriented, requiring site visits, contractor coordination, and agency meetings that limit full-remote arrangements. About 28% of transportation project manager openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with most flexibility concentrated in planning, grant management, and program controls functions rather than active construction delivery roles.
How can I get hired as a transportation project manager in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a project controls or assistant project manager role at a major Texas engineering consultancy such as AECOM, Jacobs, or Kimley-Horn, which regularly bring on early-career candidates from Texas civil engineering programs. TxDOT also hires entry-level transportation engineers and planners who rotate through project delivery units. Earning the Fundamentals of Engineering credential while in school, or pursuing a Project Management Professional associate-level certification, gives candidates a measurable edge over peers applying to the same openings.
Where can I find and apply to transportation project manager jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to transportation project manager jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the Texas market. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and specialty, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
