INTRODUCTION
Shape the Future of Water Infrastructure Across New England
This is not a traditional project management role. WSP is seeking a recognized municipal water leader who can grow client relationships, win strategic work, and lead delivery of some of the region's most important water and wastewater programs.
As a Senior Project Manager / Client Service Leader, you will serve as a trusted advisor to municipal and utility clients while helping expand our presence throughout Massachusetts and New England. You will have access to a deep national bench of technical experts — allowing you to focus on client leadership, project success, and market growth.
Why This Role Is Different
Massachusetts is in the midst of a major infrastructure investment cycle. MassDEP compliance obligations, PFAS response programs, aging conveyance and treatment infrastructure, and the push toward comprehensive asset management are driving capital programs across the Commonwealth. WSP is actively building its presence in this market — and this role is the platform to lead that growth. You will not be inheriting a mature book of business and managing the status quo. You will be shaping it.
- Opportunity to build and expand a growing practice rather than simply manage projects
- Significant autonomy to develop clients, pursue opportunities, and shape market strategy
- Access to national technical resources and subject matter experts
- Clear pathway toward Client Director, Practice Leader, and Regional Leadership roles
- Develop and strengthen executive-level relationships with municipal water and wastewater clients, utilities, and state agencies
- Lead business development, strategic positioning, capture planning, proposals, interviews, and contract negotiations
- Serve as Project Manager or Program Manager on major treatment, conveyance, pumping, resiliency, and asset management programs
- Collaborate with regional and national technical leaders to deliver exceptional client outcomes
- Mentor project managers and technical staff
- Represent WSP through NEWEA, MWWA, AWWA, ACEC, and regional industry events
- Help shape growth strategy for the New England water market
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- PE license required
- 12+ years of municipal water/wastewater consulting experience
- Established relationships with Massachusetts municipalities, utilities, and MassDEP
- Demonstrated success winning and delivering complex infrastructure programs
- Strong executive presence and client-facing leadership skills
- Experience managing multidisciplinary teams across planning, design, and construction phases

Business Development Leader Jobs in Boston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a business development leader job in Boston?
Focus your search on Boston's three strongest hiring sectors: life sciences anchored in the Longwood Medical Area and Kendall Square, enterprise technology firms in the Seaport and Back Bay, and financial services along the Financial District. Candidates who demonstrate a pipeline of named accounts and measurable revenue growth get the most attention. Familiarity with Boston's dense biotech and healthtech ecosystem gives you a clear edge over generalist applicants.
Which companies hire business development leaders in Boston?
Employers hiring business development leaders in Boston right now include Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, and WSP, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Boston's hiring base skews toward growth-stage biotech firms, enterprise SaaS companies, and large financial institutions, all of which rely heavily on senior business development talent to drive strategic partnerships and expand accounts.
Are there remote business development leader jobs in Boston?
Yes, though many business development leader roles require in-person relationship building with clients and partners, so full remote is less common than in purely analytical roles. About 19% of business development leader openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements concentrated at larger tech and financial services employers in the Seaport and Back Bay. Strategic planning and forecasting work tends to be the most remote-compatible part of the role.
How can I get a business development leader job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Boston is through a business development representative or sales development role at one of the city's many growth-stage biotech, SaaS, or fintech companies, particularly those based in the Seaport or Cambridge. Employers in these sectors regularly promote internally, making an SDR or account executive role a practical stepping stone. A degree from a Boston-area university and demonstrated outreach results, even from internships, strengthens your candidacy significantly with local hiring managers.
Which industries hire the most business development leaders in Boston?
Most business development leader openings in Boston sit in Healthcare & Medical Services, Consulting & Professional Services, and Technology & Software, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Boston's concentration of world-class research hospitals, a deep venture-backed biotech cluster, and a mature enterprise technology corridor means these sectors consistently generate more senior business development demand than any other part of the local economy.
