CAD Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cad engineer in Texas?
Most Texas employers require at minimum an associate degree in drafting and design technology or a related engineering discipline, though a bachelor's degree strengthens candidacy for senior roles. Texas does not mandate a state-issued license specifically for cad engineers, but earning a Certified Drafter credential through the American Design Drafting Association is widely recognized by Texas employers in construction, manufacturing, and energy. Building a strong portfolio of project drawings is essential for any level of hiring.
How much do CAD engineers make in Texas?
CAD engineers in Texas earn a median of about $115,810 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,430 for the lowest 10% to over $177,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cad engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring cad engineers in Texas right now include Apple, Volkert, and Garver, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy, aerospace, and large-scale infrastructure firms creates consistent year-round demand for cad engineers with sector-specific modeling experience.
Which Texas cities have the most cad engineer jobs?
Austin, Houston, and Dallas have the most cad engineer openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its dense concentration of oil and gas firms, petrochemical plants, and engineering contractors, while Dallas-Fort Worth draws heavy demand from aerospace manufacturers, commercial construction firms, and industrial equipment companies headquartered in the metro.
Are there remote cad engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based roles, since cad engineers often need to coordinate with on-site teams, review physical prototypes, or access secure design systems. About 7% of cad engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The tasks most suited to remote work are 2D drafting, model revisions, and documentation, while new-design collaboration and site verification typically require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a cad engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an associate degree in drafting technology at a Texas community college such as Houston Community College or Austin Community College, then applying directly to junior drafter or drafting technician roles at engineering and construction firms. Large Texas employers in energy and infrastructure regularly bring on entry-level drafters for documentation and redline work. A portfolio of student drawings or personal CAD projects, combined with a Certified Drafter credential, gives candidates a clear edge over others with similar academic backgrounds.
Where can I find and apply to cad engineer jobs in Texas?
