Electrical Design Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical design technician in Texas?
Most employers in Texas hire electrical design technicians who hold an associate or bachelor's degree in electrical technology, electronics engineering technology, or a closely related field from an accredited program. Texas does not require a state-issued license specifically for design technicians, but candidates who pursue a Texas-recognized EIT credential or complete coursework aligned with National Electrical Code standards stand out. Community colleges across Texas, including those in the Houston and Dallas metro areas, offer accredited programs that feed directly into entry-level roles.
How much do electrical design technicians make in Texas?
Electrical design technicians in Texas earn a median of about $74,050 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $41,550 for the lowest 10% to over $105,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical design technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring electrical design technicians in Texas right now include ENTRUST Solutions, Micron Idaho Semiconductor Manufacturing (Triton), and Micron Technology, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy companies, defense contractors, and large engineering firms makes it one of the more consistent states for this role throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most electrical design technician jobs?
Austin, Richardson, and Edinburg have the most electrical design technician openings in Texas. Houston's dominance reflects its status as the hub of the U.S. energy industry and home to major engineering firms, while Dallas draws demand from commercial construction and defense contractors, and San Antonio benefits from a strong military and federal infrastructure presence.
Are there remote electrical design technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical roles because the work often requires access to project sites, physical drawings, or lab environments. About 0% of electrical design technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects the hands-on nature of much of the role. The portions most suited to remote work include CAD drafting, design review, and documentation tasks tied to established project files.
How can I get hired as a electrical design technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate degree in electrical technology combined with a portfolio of CAD drawings, even from coursework. Large Texas engineering and energy employers regularly hire junior drafters or design technician trainees who demonstrate AutoCAD or Revit proficiency. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as electrician's apprentice, CAD operator, or construction inspector often transition successfully. Completing an internship through a Texas community college partnership or an accredited co-op program gives candidates a concrete credential that offsets a thin work history.
Where can I find and apply to electrical design technician jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to electrical design technician jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each one.
