CAD Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cad technician in Texas?
Most Texas employers hire cad technicians who hold an associate degree or technical certificate in drafting technology or engineering technology from a community college or trade school. Texas has no state-issued license specifically for cad technicians, so credentials like the Autodesk Certified Professional or a certificate from a Texas State Technical College program carry practical weight. Building a portfolio of completed drawings in AutoCAD or SolidWorks is the single most effective way to stand out when applying.
How much do CAD technicians make in Texas?
CAD technicians in Texas earn a median of about $79,380 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $52,000 for the lowest 10% to over $106,080 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cad technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring cad technicians in Texas right now include Volkert, Magrym Consulting, and Garver, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's deep concentration of engineering, energy, and aerospace firms means demand for cad technicians is spread across both large prime contractors and mid-size specialty firms throughout the state.
Which Texas cities have the most cad technician jobs?
Austin, Houston, and San Antonio account for the largest share of cad technician openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its dense cluster of oil and gas operators, EPC firms, and petrochemical plants that require continuous drafting support, while Dallas-Fort Worth draws demand from aerospace, defense, and large commercial construction activity, and San Antonio contributes through military installation projects and growing industrial development.
Are there remote cad technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical roles because cad technicians often need to coordinate with on-site engineers, attend design reviews, or access project-specific file servers. About 14% of cad technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote work most available in commercial architecture and BIM coordination roles where deliverables are fully digital.
How can I get hired as a cad technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an associate degree or technical certificate at a Texas community college such as Houston Community College, Austin Community College, or Tarrant County College, which have direct relationships with local engineering and construction firms. Applying for drafter or design technician internships at large EPC companies or civil engineering firms is a strong next step. A portfolio showing completed AutoCAD or SolidWorks drawings, even from coursework, is the credential that opens entry-level interviews fastest.
Where can I find and apply to cad technician jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to cad technician jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across industries including oil and gas, aerospace, civil engineering, and manufacturing. Search the listings for roles that match your specialty and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
