Civil Designer Jobs in Colorado: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil designer in Colorado?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology followed by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to earn your EIT designation through the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, Professional Land Surveyors, and Landscape Architects. Many Colorado firms hire civil designers at the EIT level and support them toward full PE licensure. A strong portfolio of Civil 3D work and familiarity with CDOT standards significantly improves your standing with Colorado employers.
How much do civil designers make in Colorado?
Civil designers in Colorado earn a median of about $59,050 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,450 for the lowest 10% to over $84,550 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire civil designers in Colorado?
Colorado civil designer roles are posted by Kiewit Corporation, Kimley-Horn, and Kiewit and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Colorado's sustained investment in transportation, water infrastructure, and Front Range development keeps a wide roster of engineering consultancies and public agencies actively hiring.
Which Colorado cities have the most civil designer jobs?
Denver, Lone Tree, and Colorado Springs have the most civil designer openings in Colorado right now. Denver's size and its role as a regional hub for infrastructure consulting and state agency work drives the bulk of listings, while Colorado Springs and Fort Collins reflect growth in municipal projects, military installations, and expanding university corridors that generate consistent demand for civil design professionals.
Are there remote civil designer jobs in Colorado?
Yes, but they're limited. Civil design is fundamentally tied to site visits, local standards review, and coordination with project teams, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 38% of civil designer openings tied to Colorado are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with the hybrid arrangements tending to apply to the production-drafting and CAD-heavy portions of the role rather than field or client-facing work.
How can I get hired as a civil designer in Colorado with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is applying for a designer or CAD technician role at a mid-size Colorado engineering consultancy, where firms like those supporting CDOT projects regularly bring on new graduates or candidates transitioning from drafting or survey roles. Earning your EIT through the Colorado licensing board signals commitment and gives you an edge. Internships with Colorado municipalities or regional transportation planning organizations also convert to full-time offers at a higher rate than cold applications.
Where can I find and apply to civil designer jobs in Colorado?
You can find and apply to civil designer jobs in Colorado on Migrate Mate, which lists current Colorado openings in one place. Search the roles available, find the ones that match your experience and target location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
