Cloud Solutions Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cloud solutions engineer in Virginia?
Most cloud solutions engineer roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or engineering, combined with a recognized cloud certification such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert. Virginia has no state-issued license for this role, but federal contracting employers across Northern Virginia routinely require candidates to hold or qualify for a DoD security clearance before starting.
How much do cloud solutions engineers make in Virginia?
Cloud solutions engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $136,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,350 for the lowest 10% to over $211,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cloud solutions engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring cloud solutions engineers in Virginia right now include Booz Allen Hamilton, Node.Digital, and General Dynamics Information Technology, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's dense concentration of federal agencies and defense contractors means many of these employers specifically seek engineers familiar with government cloud compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP and IL4.
Which Virginia cities have the most cloud solutions engineer jobs?
Chantilly, Arlington, and McLean have the most cloud solutions engineer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because it anchors the largest concentration of federal agencies, intelligence community contractors, and hyperscale data center campuses in the country, while Richmond and Hampton Roads draw demand from state government IT modernization programs and large military and naval installations.
Are there remote cloud solutions engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 45% of cloud solutions engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how thoroughly the role is desk-based and infrastructure-agnostic. Architecture, design, and migration planning work transfers well to fully remote arrangements, though roles tied to classified government programs typically require on-site presence at a cleared facility in Virginia.
How can I get hired as a cloud solutions engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is earning an entry-level cloud certification, such as AWS Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, then applying to associate cloud engineer or junior systems administrator roles at Virginia-based federal contractors like Leidos, SAIC, or General Dynamics IT, which run structured new-graduate and rotational development programs. Adjacent roles in IT support, network administration, or systems operations at Virginia state agencies also serve as common on-ramps, and a portfolio of hands-on lab projects on platforms like AWS or Azure can offset limited professional experience.
Where can I find and apply to cloud solutions engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to cloud solutions engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the ones that match.
