How do I get a communications director job in Boston?
Boston's strongest hiring comes from academic medical centers, universities, financial services firms, and mission-driven nonprofits in neighborhoods like the Longwood Medical Area, Back Bay, and Fenway. Candidates who stand out typically combine earned media experience with crisis communications fluency and a portfolio that shows measurable outcomes. Familiarity with Boston's dense network of academic and healthcare institutions gives local applicants a clear edge over generalists.
Which companies hire communications directors in Boston?
Employers hiring communications directors in Boston right now include Boston University, Veeva Systems, and Merck KGaA, based on current listings on MigrateAte as of June 2026. Boston's mix of world-class hospitals, Ivy-adjacent universities, major asset managers, and a deep bench of advocacy nonprofits makes it one of the more varied markets for senior communications roles on the East Coast.
Are there remote communications director jobs in Boston?
Yes, though selectively: communications director roles that center on executive visibility, media relations, and stakeholder engagement tend to require an on-site or hybrid presence, while content strategy and internal communications functions are more remote-friendly. About 47% of communications director openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Nonprofit and higher education employers in Boston most commonly offer hybrid arrangements at the director level.
How can I get a communications director job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through Boston's large nonprofit and higher education sectors, where communications associate and manager roles at institutions like teaching hospitals, advocacy organizations, and colleges routinely serve as stepping stones to director-level positions. Building experience in media relations or internal communications at a Boston-area institution, then moving laterally into a senior manager role, puts you on a direct path. Volunteering with Boston-based civic organizations to build a local media network also accelerates the progression.

Boston's identity as a global hub for life sciences, higher education, and financial services creates sustained institutional demand for senior communications professionals who can manage complex, highly regulated, or research-driven narratives.
