Frame your degree around BCG's specialty occupation standard
BCG's Software Consultant roles require a degree that directly aligns with the technical scope of the work. A computer science or engineering degree strengthens your H-1B specialty occupation case more than a general business degree, even if your experience is strong.
Target BCG's campus recruiting pipeline early
BCG recruits Software Consultants heavily through university programs, and OPT hires often convert to H-1B sponsorship after demonstrating performance. Applying through BCG's campus portal before your OPT start date gives you the most runway before the April H-1B registration deadline.
Distinguish yourself with client-facing technical experience
BCG evaluates Software Consultants on their ability to translate complex systems thinking into business solutions. Interviewers will probe your prior work on client-facing projects, so prepare case examples that show both technical depth and stakeholder communication across industries.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active BCG Software Consultant openings
BCG posts Software Consultant roles across offices at different times of year, and not all listings are easy to track. Use Migrate Mate to filter for BCG openings that explicitly support visa sponsorship so you can apply during active hiring windows.
Understand how BCG structures LCA filings for consulting roles
Because Software Consultants often work at client sites across multiple locations, BCG typically files a blanket Labor Condition Application or location-specific addenda with the DOL. Confirm with your recruiter which work location will be designated on your LCA before your offer is finalized.
Plan around the H-1B cap if you're switching from OPT
If you're on F-1 OPT when BCG extends an offer, your H-1B petition must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start. If you miss the registration window, BCG may offer a cap-exempt position or bridge you on an OPT extension if you qualify for the 24-month STEM extension.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Boston Consulting Group sponsor H-1B visas for Software Consultants?
Yes, BCG sponsors H-1B visas for Software Consultants. The firm participates in the annual USCIS H-1B lottery each spring and has a structured process for supporting international hires in this function. If you're already on OPT, BCG will typically initiate the H-1B registration on your behalf before the April deadline.
How do I apply for Software Consultant jobs at Boston Consulting Group?
Apply directly through BCG's careers portal or via campus recruiting if you're a current student. BCG uses a case interview format for Software Consultant roles, so preparing structured problem-solving responses is essential. You can also browse open Software Consultant positions at BCG that support visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by sponsorship eligibility.
Which visa types does Boston Consulting Group commonly use for Software Consultants?
BCG sponsors several visa categories for Software Consultants, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian nationals, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and F-1 OPT and CPT for students still in their program. H-1B1 visa is also available for Chilean and Singaporean nationals. The right pathway depends on your citizenship and current immigration status.
What qualifications does BCG expect for Software Consultant roles?
BCG typically looks for a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a closely related technical field. Strong analytical skills, experience with software development or systems architecture, and the ability to work across client environments are expected. Prior consulting experience is valued but not always required for entry-level hires.
How do I know if the timeline works for my visa status before accepting a BCG offer?
The key dates to align are your OPT expiration, the H-1B registration window (March), and the cap-subject start date (October 1). If your OPT expires before October 1 and you're not eligible for the STEM extension, ask BCG's HR team about bridge options early in the offer process, since the firm has experience navigating this gap.
