ABOUT THE TEAM
Join ByteDance’s database R&D team, where you’ll build and own cutting-edge database products supporting ByteDance’s global infrastructure. Our diverse portfolio includes relational databases, distributed caches, key-value stores, document databases, graph databases, wide-column stores, search engines, and multi-model databases.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are building the next-generation AI-native database systems—intelligent, multimodal, and designed for the era of large models. Our systems are not just data stores; they’re reasoning engines, retrieval platforms, and real-time memory for AI agents. As a Software Engineer or Researcher, you will be at the forefront of rethinking how databases work when built from the ground up for AI workloads. You’ll help create infrastructure that powers intelligent systems across TikTok, CapCut, and future applications that haven’t been imagined yet.
We are looking for talented individuals to join us for an internship. PhD internships at Our Company provide students with the opportunity to actively contribute to our products and research, as well as to the organization's future plans and emerging technologies.
Our dynamic internship experience blends hands-on learning, enriching community-building and professional development events, and collaboration with industry experts.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so we encourage you to apply early. Please clearly state your availability in your resume (Start date, End date).

Tailor your portfolio to ByteDance's core products
ByteDance's Data Scientist roles typically center on recommendation algorithms, ads ranking, and large-scale user behavior modeling. Frame your project work around these domains before applying, not after. Generic ML portfolios get screened out early.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
ByteDance sponsors multiple visa types, and the one filed for you affects your timeline significantly. If you're Australian and eligible for the E-3, flag that early so the recruiting team routes your paperwork correctly from the start.
Align your application timing with H-1B cap season
If you need an H-1B and aren't currently in valid status, your start date is constrained by the October 1 fiscal year cap. Time your interview process so an offer can be in hand before the April USCIS registration window opens.
Verify your LCA wage level matches your actual scope
ByteDance files Labor Condition Applications through DOL that specify a prevailing wage level. If you're negotiating a senior individual contributor role but the LCA is filed at Level 1, that mismatch can complicate both your offer and your visa petition.
Use Migrate Mate to filter ByteDance Data Scientist openings by visa type
Not every ByteDance Data Scientist posting is attached to active sponsorship for every visa category. Search Migrate Mate to surface roles specifically tagged for the visa type you hold or are targeting, then apply directly through the job listing.
Prepare for technical screens that reflect production-scale systems
ByteDance's Data Scientist interviews frequently test experimentation design, causal inference, and metrics frameworks, not just modeling. Review A/B testing methodology and product sense scenarios alongside your SQL and Python prep.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ByteDance sponsor H-1B visas for Data Scientists?
Yes, ByteDance sponsors H-1B visas for Data Scientist roles. The company participates in the annual USCIS H-1B cap registration process, so if you need a new H-1B, your start date will depend on the lottery outcome and the October 1 cap year. If you already hold H-1B status with another employer, ByteDance can file an H-1B transfer without waiting for a new cap slot.
How do I apply for Data Scientist jobs at ByteDance?
Applications go through ByteDance's careers portal, where Data Scientist roles are listed by team and product area. You can also browse active ByteDance Data Scientist openings filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate, which helps you identify postings that align with your specific sponsorship situation before you invest time in the application process.
Which visa types does ByteDance commonly use for Data Scientist roles?
ByteDance sponsors H-1B, H-1B1 visa, and E-3 visas for Data Scientist positions, along with EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa categories for longer-term sponsorship. H-1B is the most common pathway for international candidates. E-3 applies exclusively to Australian citizens and offers a simpler process with no annual lottery. H-1B1 is available to citizens of Chile and Singapore under specific treaty arrangements.
What qualifications does ByteDance expect for Data Scientist roles?
Most ByteDance Data Scientist positions require a bachelor's degree at minimum in statistics, computer science, mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field, with a master's or PhD preferred for research-oriented tracks. Beyond credentials, expect strong SQL, Python, and experimentation design skills. Roles focused on ads or recommendation systems also weight product sense and causal inference methodology heavily in the interview process.
How long does visa sponsorship typically take once ByteDance extends an offer?
Timeline depends on the visa category. For the E-3, consular processing in Australia generally runs two to four weeks from interview to visa issuance. H-1B transfers for candidates already in status can be filed with a same-day start under portability rules. New H-1B cap cases require waiting until October 1 of the relevant fiscal year. USCIS premium processing is available on H-1B petitions for a 15-business-day adjudication window.
