Verify your NCLEX and state licensure first
Virginia requires RN licensure before Centra Health can extend a sponsored offer. Confirm your credential evaluation through a NACES-approved agency and initiate the Virginia Board of Nursing application early, since delays here stall the entire visa timeline.
Target units with persistent staffing needs
Centra Health consistently posts openings in acute care, med-surg, and progressive care. Applying to high-demand units improves your odds of reaching a hiring manager willing to initiate sponsorship rather than waiting for an already-authorized candidate.
Browse open nursing roles on Migrate Mate
Centra Health's nursing openings that include visa sponsorship are listed on Migrate Mate, so you can filter specifically for sponsored positions rather than sorting through roles that won't support international candidates.
Clarify the EB-3 timeline before accepting an offer
EB-3 sponsorship for nurses typically involves PERM labor certification, which adds 12 to 18 months before USCIS adjudicates the I-140. Ask the recruiter whether the employer initiates PERM at hire or after a tenure threshold, since that gap affects your planning significantly.
Confirm OPT STEM extension eligibility for F-1 candidates
Nursing is not a STEM-designated CIP code, so F-1 candidates on OPT receive a standard 12-month period without a STEM extension. Structure your job search timeline around that window and discuss transition to a long-term visa category with the HR team before OPT expires.
Ask about TN eligibility if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Registered nurses from Canada or Mexico qualify for TN status, which DOL does not require labor certification for. This pathway moves faster than EB-3 and allows Centra Health to bring you onboard without the PERM queue, making it a practical first option for eligible candidates.

Find Nursing at Centra Health JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Centra Health sponsor H-1B visas for Nursings?
Centra Health does not typically sponsor H-1B visas for registered nursing roles because the H-1B requires a specialty occupation tied to a specific bachelor's degree field, and nursing does not consistently meet that threshold under USCIS policy. Centra Health's nursing sponsorship activity is concentrated in EB-2, EB-3, TN, and F-1 OPT categories instead.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at Centra Health?
Applications go through Centra Health's career portal, where you can filter by department and location across their Lynchburg-area facilities. Before applying, confirm that the posting explicitly references visa sponsorship eligibility. Roles in high-demand units like med-surg and acute care are the most likely to move forward with international candidates who require sponsorship.
Which visa types does Centra Health commonly use for Nursing roles?
Centra Health sponsors nurses through EB-3 immigrant visas for permanent pathways, F-1 OPT and CPT for students completing nursing programs, TN status for Canadian and Mexican citizens, and J-1 for eligible exchange visitors. EB-3 is the most common long-term route, involving PERM labor certification filed with DOL followed by an I-140 petition with USCIS.
What qualifications does Centra Health expect from international nursing candidates?
You'll need an active Virginia RN license, which requires passing the NCLEX-RN and having your foreign nursing credentials evaluated by a CGFNS-approved organization. Clinical experience in acute or progressive care settings strengthens your application. Some units also expect BLS certification and, depending on specialty, ACLS. Language proficiency documentation is required for candidates whose primary education was not in English.
How long does the sponsorship and hiring process take for a Nursing role at Centra Health?
Timeline depends on your visa category. TN status can be obtained at a port of entry in days once you have the offer letter and supporting documents. EB-3 through PERM takes considerably longer, often 18 to 36 months from offer to authorization depending on USCIS processing backlogs and your country of birth. F-1 OPT candidates can begin work within their authorized period immediately after USCIS approves the EAD. Use Migrate Mate to identify which open roles at Centra Health are actively seeking sponsored candidates before starting the process.
