Job Description:
Clark University's Department of Visual and Performing Arts seeks an experienced and collaborative Theater Technical Director to play a central role in bringing theatrical productions, performances, and student creative work to life.
This is a hands-on opportunity for a technical theatre professional who enjoys the full range of production work, from scenic construction and lighting to audio, video, rigging, and shop operations, and who is equally energized by working with students. The Technical Director oversees Clark's primary theatre and production spaces, supports departmental productions from concept through execution, and helps students develop the practical skills and confidence to turn creative ideas into successful performances.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with a commitment to safety, collaboration, problem-solving, and student mentorship.
As Technical Director, you will:
- Provide technical leadership and oversight for departmental performance and production spaces, including the Michelson Theatre, Experimental Theatre, wood shop, prop shop, dance studio, and related spaces within the Little Center.
- Support the safe and successful execution of theatrical productions across scenic construction, lighting, audio, video, rigging, automation, and other technical production areas.
- Collaborate with faculty, visiting artists, designers, students, and departmental leadership to identify technical needs and develop practical solutions for productions and events.
- Maintain a safe production environment consistent with applicable regulations, University policies, and industry best practices.
- Mentor student designers and technicians and help students translate creative concepts and design drawings into executable production plans.
- Serve as a co-teacher for Theatre Practicum in collaboration with full-time faculty and visiting artists.
- Hire, train, supervise, and support student employees working in departmental spaces and productions.
- Oversee the safe operation of the scene shop and theatrical equipment and tools.
- Coordinate preventative and responsive maintenance of theatre and production spaces, working closely with Clark Facilities and external partners as needed.
- Help ensure that performance, rehearsal, and production spaces remain safe, functional, organized, and ready to support the creative work of the department.
Job Requirements: What We're Looking For
We are seeking someone who brings both strong technical theatre expertise and an ability to work effectively with students, faculty, artists, and colleagues across the University.
Required qualifications include:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of professional training and industry experience.
- Approximately five years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience supervising or leading others in a production, shop, or technical environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of entertainment rigging, including experience with counterweight systems and black box environments.
- Demonstrated competency with theatrical lighting, audio, projection, video, and related production equipment.
- Strong knowledge of safe scene shop operations, theatrical tools, and scenic construction.
- Ability to read and interpret theatrical design drawings and translate designs into construction and production plans.
- Working knowledge of applicable safety requirements and industry standards, including OSHA requirements, fire codes, and established entertainment-production practices.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively while also taking ownership of the day-to-day technical needs of theatre spaces and productions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a college, university, or other educational environment is preferred.
Work Environment
This is primarily an on-site position due to the hands-on nature of theatrical production and student support. Some pre- and post-production work may be completed remotely when appropriate and in coordination with departmental leadership.
The position requires the ability to work within theatre, backstage, and scene-shop environments and to lift up to 25 pounds.
Why Clark?
At Clark, the Technical Director is more than the person who keeps the theatre running. This role is an important creative and educational partner within the Visual and Performing Arts community.
You'll have the opportunity to work closely with students as they develop as designers, technicians, artists, and collaborators while contributing your own expertise to a diverse range of productions and creative projects. For someone who enjoys both the craft of technical theatre and the opportunity to teach and mentor the next generation of theatre-makers, this role offers the chance to make a visible impact on the artistic life of the University.

Target academic and research roles first
Clark University's sponsorship activity is concentrated in faculty, postdoctoral, and research-adjacent positions. Focus your search on departments with active grant funding or international hiring needs, where visa sponsorship is a routine part of the offer process.
Understand the visa types Clark supports
Clark sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation roles and pursues Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for longer-term hires. Knowing which category fits your role helps you ask the right questions during the hiring process and set realistic expectations.
Apply well ahead of H-1B cap deadlines
Universities like Clark must file H-1B petitions before the April lottery registration window. If you're interviewing in late fall or winter, confirm your start date aligns with the October 1 cap year so the timeline works before you receive a formal offer.
Ask directly about Green Card support during negotiations
Clark has a track record of supporting permanent residency for long-term employees. If you're interested in an immigrant visa pathway, raise it during offer discussions rather than after onboarding, universities typically initiate PERM labor certification through their HR or legal team.
Canadian and Mexican nationals should ask about TN eligibility
Clark sponsors TN visas for qualifying professional roles, which offers a faster and simpler pathway than H-1B for eligible candidates. If you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship, confirm whether your role qualifies under TN categories before defaulting to the H-1B process.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring roles
Not every Clark University job posting will mention visa sponsorship explicitly. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and identify open roles at Clark where international candidates have a genuine shot at being sponsored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Clark University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Clark University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying specialty occupation roles, particularly in academic, research, and professional staff positions. As a university employer, Clark is cap-exempt, meaning it can file H-1B petitions at any time of year rather than being restricted to the annual April lottery window. This makes the timeline more flexible for both the university and the candidate.
Which visa types does Clark University sponsor?
Clark University sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation employees and supports Green Card pathways through EB-2 and EB-3 classifications for eligible long-term hires. The university also sponsors TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying professional roles. Sponsorship decisions are typically made on a role-by-role basis through Clark's HR and legal teams.
Which departments or roles at Clark University are most likely to sponsor visas?
Faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and specialist staff in STEM, social sciences, and graduate programs are the most common visa-sponsored roles at Clark. Administrative and professional staff positions in areas like IT, finance, and student affairs may also qualify, particularly for H-1B, when the role requires a specific degree field. Checking job descriptions for language about sponsorship eligibility is a reliable signal.
How do I find open visa-sponsored jobs at Clark University?
Clark University posts open positions through its official careers portal, but sponsorship eligibility isn't always stated upfront. Migrate Mate aggregates roles from verified sponsoring employers, including universities like Clark, so you can filter by sponsorship history and focus your applications on positions where international candidates have been sponsored before. This saves time compared to screening dozens of postings individually.
How do I approach the visa sponsorship conversation during a Clark University interview?
Raise sponsorship early but professionally, ideally after an initial phone screen confirms mutual interest. Universities are generally experienced with visa processes, so being direct is appropriate. Ask whether the role is eligible for H-1B or TN sponsorship and confirm that Clark's legal team handles petitions in-house or through immigration counsel. Clarifying this before the offer stage avoids delays and misaligned expectations.
