Position Virtual Production Technical Director
Department Information Technology
Available July 2026
Detroit Country Day School is a private, independent, co-educational, non-denominational, preschool through grade 12, college preparatory school focused on a well-rounded liberal arts education. Emphasis on academics, arts, athletics, and character development is prevalent across the curriculum. DCDS believes diversity, equity, and inclusion are educational imperatives for the intellectual, social, and moral growth of every child. We honor the dignity of every human being and value differences that exist and are expressed throughout our vibrant school.
Position Summary
We are seeking a Virtual Production Technical Director to serve as the cinematic engineer for our xR Studio’s LED volume. In this role, you will own the Disguise server pipeline and partner closely with our Virtual Production Engineer and Technology Integrator to enable students to create cinema-quality virtual productions. Your primary focus is to enable students to film cinema quality virtual productions. You will collaborate directly with the film teacher to analyze student scripts, engineer pre-production content pipelines, and manage our Disguise and Unreal Engine ecosystem. Additionally, you will collaborate on creative outreach and bring projects to life for students across grades PreK–12.
Qualifications
- Proven experience configuring, operating, and troubleshooting Disguise in a live production, xR, or virtual studio environment.
- An understanding of xR and VP workflows, including camera tracking systems (MoSys StarTracker or similar), Brompton LED processor, and how they interface with Disguise RenderStream.
- Working knowledge of Unreal Engine workflows and the ability to collaborate effectively with our dedicated Virtual Production Engineer.
- An understanding of camera mechanics, genlock, shutter synchronization, color spaces, and studio DMX lighting.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, show initiative, and solve complex technical problems creatively and efficiently.
Essential Responsibilities
Pre-Production Partnership
- Partner with the Film teacher to review student scripts and storyboards, advising on how to successfully translate their narrative ideas into the virtual production environment.
- Collaborate with the Virtual Production Engineer during the pre-visualization phase to source, build, or optimize 3D assets and environments within Unreal Engine, ensuring they are production-ready.
- Guide student filmmakers through tech rehearsals to block camera movements, test tracking limits, and pre-light scenes before official shoot days.
xR Pipeline Collaboration & Technical Management
- Manage the end-to-end xR pipeline with the Virtual Production Engineer. While the VP Engineer focuses heavily on Unreal Engine optimization and nDisplay configuration, you will lead the Disguise media integration.
- Serve as the primary operator and systems engineer for our Disguise ecosystem, specifically driving advanced workflows like extended sets.
- Calibrate and maintain our camera tracking system (MoSys StarTracker Max) paired with our RED V-Raptor VV camera and jib setup to ensure zero latency or drift.
Ensuring Cinematic Quality
- Serve as the technical authority during live shoots, diagnosing and resolving real-time pipeline bottlenecks (e.g., tracking occlusion, moiré, or frame drops) to keep the production moving.
- Ensure studio DMX lighting, camera shutter angles, and the LED volume are in sync to produce a cinematic final frame.
- Oversee the rapid ingestion and management of raw footage (RED RAW) from the studio floor to the post-production pipeline.
Pre K-12 Collaboration
- Collaborate with our Instructional Technologist to adapt the xR stage for younger students. While they manage the age-appropriate lesson plans and student logistics, you will engineer the Disguise and tracking pipeline to bring their PreK–12 class projects and scripts to life.
- Demystify the xR Studio for students. You will set up safe environments that allow PreK–12 students to successfully navigate The Studio and experience the filmmaking process.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods during collaboration with students, faculty, and project teams.
- Frequent use of hands to operate computers, cameras, audio/visual equipment, and other digital production tools.
- Ability to move throughout campus and studio spaces to support classrooms.
- Capability to set up, operate, and troubleshoot equipment in The Studios, including cameras, lighting, audio, and emerging technologies.
- Ability to occasionally lift, carry, and position equipment and materials up to 25–40 pounds (i.e., AV equipment).
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, or reach as needed to support studio setup and equipment adjustments.
Work Environment
Noise levels may vary depending on the setting, particularly during studio production, student collaboration, or live events.

Target roles that require specialized credentials
Detroit Country Day School sponsors visas for positions demanding subject-matter expertise. Focus your application on roles where your academic background or specialized teaching credentials make you a strong, differentiated candidate rather than a generalist applicant.
Understand the school's H-1B sponsorship pattern
The school's sponsorship activity is selective rather than broad. Research which academic departments or administrative functions have historically required visa support, and tailor your outreach to hiring managers in those specific areas.
Leverage F-1 OPT or CPT as an entry point
Detroit Country Day School sponsors F-1 OPT and CPT, making it a viable starting point for recent graduates. Securing a position under OPT can establish your track record and position you for longer-term H-1B sponsorship consideration.
Apply well ahead of the H-1B cap deadline
H-1B petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October start. For an independent school operating on an academic calendar, coordinating that timeline with hiring decisions requires early engagement, ideally by January or February of the target year.
Highlight your fit for independent school culture
Detroit Country Day School is a private institution with a distinct academic mission. Demonstrating genuine alignment with its educational philosophy strengthens your candidacy and signals you're worth the administrative investment sponsorship requires.
Search verified sponsors before applying broadly
Not every school advertises its sponsorship history clearly. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you focus your search on schools like Detroit Country Day that have a documented track record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DETROIT COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Detroit Country Day School has sponsored H-1B visas. Sponsorship is selective and tends to be tied to specific faculty or specialized staff roles where a qualified international candidate fills a genuine need. If you're targeting an H-1B path here, focus on positions that align closely with your degree and area of expertise, and engage with the school early in the hiring cycle given the April cap deadline.
What visa types does DETROIT COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL sponsor?
Detroit Country Day School sponsors H-1B visas for skilled workers and supports F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT for students and recent graduates gaining practical training. TN visa sponsorship is also available for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals. This range of visa types makes the school a viable option for international candidates at multiple stages of their career.
Which roles or departments are most likely to receive visa sponsorship at DETROIT COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL?
Visa sponsorship at independent schools like Detroit Country Day is most commonly tied to teaching and specialized instructional roles where specific subject-matter expertise or advanced credentials are required. Administrative and support positions may qualify in some cases, but faculty and academic roles with clearly defined degree requirements tend to have the strongest sponsorship precedent in K-12 education.
How do I find open jobs at DETROIT COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL that offer visa sponsorship?
The most reliable approach is to use Migrate Mate, which indexes employers with verified sponsorship histories so you can filter for schools actively sponsoring international candidates. Check Detroit Country Day School's own careers page alongside your search, and prioritize roles posted in the fall and spring hiring cycles, which align with the school's academic calendar and staffing needs.
How do I approach the application timeline when targeting DETROIT COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL for H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B petitions must be filed with USCIS by April 1, so working backwards, you'll want an offer in hand by February at the latest to give the school's legal team time to prepare. Reach out to Detroit Country Day School's hiring team early, ideally in the fall prior to your target start year, and be upfront about your visa needs from the first conversation to avoid timing mismatches.
