Build a portfolio around systems-scale work
Google's UX hiring focuses heavily on design systems, cross-platform consistency, and zero-to-one product thinking. Before applying, reframe your portfolio case studies to show impact at scale, not just polished screens or individual feature work.
Identify which Google teams are actively filing
Google hires UX Product Designers across Search, Maps, Workspace, and Cloud, but visa filing activity is uneven across teams. Search DOL Labor Condition Application disclosure data to see which business units have recently sponsored designers in your visa category.
Confirm your visa category before the offer stage
Google sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 visas for design roles. If you're Australian, the E-3 bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. Clarify with the recruiter early which category applies to you so the offer letter and LCA are structured correctly from the start.
Target roles explicitly requiring a design degree
H-1B specialty occupation status requires a degree in a directly related field. UX roles that list 'bachelor's degree in HCI, design, or a related field' as a hard requirement are better sponsorship candidates than roles where any degree qualifies. Review the job description language carefully.
Track Google UX openings through Migrate Mate
Google's careers site doesn't filter by visa sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified UX Product Design roles at Google and other sponsors, so you're applying to positions where international hiring is already confirmed rather than guessing from the listing.
Prepare for a longer onboarding timeline if filing new
If you're filing a new H-1B rather than transferring an existing one, Google must submit your registration in the USCIS lottery in March for an October 1 start. Structure your job search timeline backwards from that cap date to avoid gaps in authorization.

Find UX Product Design at Google JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Google sponsor H-1B visas for UX Product Designers?
Yes, Google sponsors H-1B visas for UX Product Design roles. Because these positions require specialized knowledge in human-computer interaction, interaction design, or a related field, they typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, Google can file an H-1B transfer, which lets you start work once USCIS receives the petition rather than waiting for approval.
How do I apply for UX Product Design jobs at Google?
Apply directly through Google's careers portal at careers.google.com. Search for titles like UX Designer, Product Designer, or Interaction Designer depending on the team. Google's design hiring process typically involves a portfolio review, a recruiter screen, a design exercise or case study presentation, and a multi-round interview loop covering design thinking, collaboration, and systems judgment. Having a well-structured portfolio that shows end-to-end process is more important than volume of work.
Which visa types does Google sponsor for UX Product Design roles?
Google sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 visas for UX Product Design positions. H-1B is the most common path and is subject to the annual USCIS lottery. H-1B1 is available to Chilean and Singaporean nationals and has a separate annual allocation. E-3 is exclusive to Australian citizens and has historically had far more available slots than applicants, making it a more predictable path for Australians than the H-1B lottery.
What qualifications does Google expect for UX Product Design roles?
Google typically expects a bachelor's degree or higher in interaction design, human-computer interaction, industrial design, or a closely related field. Beyond the degree, hiring teams look for demonstrated experience designing at scale, proficiency with tools like Figma, and the ability to translate complex user research into product decisions. Candidates with experience on high-traffic consumer products or enterprise platforms tend to be competitive. The degree field matters for visa purposes, so a directly relevant qualification strengthens both your application and your H-1B specialty occupation case.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Google UX design role?
Timeline depends heavily on your visa category. For H-1B, if you're not currently in status, you'll need to enter the USCIS lottery in March, with a start date no earlier than October 1 of that year. H-1B transfers from an existing employer can move faster since you can start work upon receipt. E-3 visas for Australian nationals are processed at a U.S. consulate and typically take two to six weeks from interview to approval, without the lottery constraint. Build your offer negotiation and start date around whichever path applies to you.
