Target faculty and research roles first
SIU Medicine's Green Card sponsorship concentrates in academic medicine: faculty positions, principal investigators, and clinical research coordinators. Applying to these roles gives you the strongest starting point, since they're the most likely to trigger employer-initiated PERM filings.
Understand which EB category fits your credentials
EB-2 requires an advanced degree or exceptional ability; EB-3 covers professionals and skilled workers. For research-track roles at SIU Medicine, EB-2 is common. Confirm which category your role qualifies for before accepting an offer, since it affects your PERM timeline and priority date.
Document your specialty occupation credentials early
PERM labor certification requires your employer to define the minimum qualifications for your role. Gather official transcripts, foreign credential evaluations, and published works before your offer stage so SIU Medicine's HR team can accurately describe your position in the PERM application.
Request the sponsorship conversation before signing
Academic medical employers often have structured timelines for initiating PERM filings tied to budget cycles or faculty appointment terms. Ask SIU Medicine's international office directly when they'd start the PERM process, not whether they sponsor, to get a concrete answer about your specific role.
Verify prevailing wage before your salary negotiation
PERM requires your offered salary to meet or exceed the DOL-determined prevailing wage for your occupation and location in Illinois. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the wage level for your O*NET occupation code before negotiating, so your offer is PERM-compliant from day one.
Use Migrate Mate to track SIU Medicine's filing history
Before committing to a role, use Migrate Mate to review SIU Medicine's Green Card filing history by occupation. You'll see which departments have filed before and under which EB categories, giving you a realistic picture of where sponsorship actually happens at this institution.
SIU Medicine Green Card Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does SIU Medicine sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, SIU Medicine sponsors Green Cards for qualifying employees, primarily in faculty, research, and specialized clinical roles. Sponsorship typically proceeds through EB-2 or EB-3 preference categories and requires PERM labor certification filed by the employer through the DOL. Sponsorship is generally tied to specific positions rather than offered universally across all departments.
Which roles at SIU Medicine are most likely to receive Green Card sponsorship?
Sponsorship at SIU Medicine is most common for tenure-track or clinical faculty, research scientists, and highly specialized clinical staff where recruitment from the U.S. labor market is demonstrably limited. Administrative and general support roles are less frequently sponsored. Positions tied to federally funded research programs are among the most consistent candidates for employer-initiated filings.
How do I start the Green Card process at SIU Medicine?
The process begins with your employer filing a PERM application with the DOL, which certifies that no qualified U.S. worker is available for your role. SIU Medicine's HR or legal team typically manages this filing. You should raise Green Card sponsorship during the offer negotiation phase and confirm the institution's internal timeline for initiating PERM after your start date.
How long does the Green Card process take at SIU Medicine?
From PERM filing to receiving your Green Card, the process typically takes several years. PERM itself can take over a year to certify through DOL, followed by an I-140 petition with USCIS, and then waiting for a visa number to become available based on your priority date and country of birth. EB-2 applicants from most countries face shorter backlogs than EB-3.
How do I find open Green Card jobs at SIU Medicine?
Migrate Mate lists verified Green Card sponsoring employers, including SIU Medicine, filtered by role type and visa category so you can identify current openings where sponsorship is realistic. Cross-referencing with SIU Medicine's own careers portal and reaching out to their academic recruitment team directly can also surface unlisted faculty and research positions that qualify for sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at SIU Medicine?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
