Target research and faculty-track roles first
The University of Michigan's strongest sponsorship activity centers on research, faculty, and specialized academic positions. Focus your applications on departments where international talent is core to the work, such as STEM, medicine, and public policy.
Understand the academic hiring calendar
University hiring follows an academic year cycle. Faculty searches typically open in fall for positions starting the following year. Aligning your application timeline with these cycles improves your chances of being considered before sponsorship decisions are made.
Look beyond Ann Arbor for hiring activity
Michigan Health System, Michigan Medicine, and affiliated research institutes hire internationally across multiple campuses and facilities. Broadening your search to clinical and research arms expands the pool of sponsorship-eligible roles significantly.
Prioritize departments with ongoing grant funding
Grant-funded research positions at Michigan tend to have greater flexibility around visa sponsorship because budget is tied to the project. Roles in federally funded labs, clinical research, and engineering departments are worth targeting specifically.
Filter for verified sponsors before you apply
Not every university role comes with sponsorship, even at active sponsors like Michigan. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and avoid wasting applications on positions that won't move forward.

Find University of Michigan JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Michigan sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, the University of Michigan sponsors H-1B visas and is one of the most active employers in the higher education sector for this category. Sponsorship is most common for faculty, research scientists, and specialized professional staff. The university's HR and international office manage the petition process directly, and sponsorship is generally initiated after a job offer is extended.
Which visa types does University of Michigan sponsor?
Michigan sponsors a broad range of visa categories including H-1B, J-1 for exchange scholars and researchers, F-1 OPT and CPT for students, TN for Canadian and Mexican professionals, and employment-based Green Cards through the EB-2 and EB-3 pathways. The J-1 category is especially prevalent given the university's volume of international visiting scholars and postdoctoral researchers.
Which roles or departments at University of Michigan are most likely to sponsor visas?
Research-intensive departments, Michigan Medicine, the School of Engineering, and the School of Public Health account for a substantial share of Michigan's international hiring. Roles such as postdoctoral researchers, research scientists, clinical faculty, data scientists, and specialized academic professionals are the most frequently sponsored. Administrative and student-services roles are less commonly sponsored.
How do I find open jobs at University of Michigan that offer visa sponsorship?
The most reliable approach is to search for roles using a platform that tracks real sponsorship history rather than relying on job descriptions alone. Migrate Mate lets you browse University of Michigan's open positions filtered by verified sponsorship activity, so you can focus only on roles where international candidates have a genuine path forward.
How do I approach the application timeline when targeting University of Michigan for H-1B sponsorship?
If you need an H-1B, timing matters significantly. The annual H-1B cap lottery opens in March for an October 1 start date. Michigan can file cap-exempt petitions for certain roles at qualifying research institutions, which removes the lottery constraint entirely. Confirm cap-exempt eligibility with the hiring department early in the process, as it substantially changes your planning horizon.
