Job Roles at University of Illinois
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in University of Illinois Green Card Visa Sponsorship Jobs USA
Target faculty and research roles first
Green Card sponsorship at University of Illinois is most common for tenure-track faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and specialized research staff. These roles align with the EB-1B and EB-2 categories that universities typically use for academic hires.
Understand the PERM labor certification process
Most University of Illinois Green Card cases go through PERM, which requires the university to document a recruitment effort. Starting this process early in your employment gives you the best chance of a smooth, timely filing.
Build your case for EB-1B or NIW eligibility
Researchers with strong publication records, citations, or national recognition may qualify for EB-1B outstanding researcher or a National Interest Waiver, bypassing PERM entirely. Document your academic contributions from day one.
Engage the international office early
The University of Illinois has a dedicated international services office that coordinates immigration filings. Establishing a relationship before you need sponsorship helps you understand their internal timelines and documentation requirements.
Use verified sponsorship data when job searching
Not every open role will lead to Green Card sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you focus your applications on University of Illinois positions most likely to support a Green Card.

Does University of Illinois sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, University of Illinois sponsors Green Card visas for eligible employees, primarily in faculty, research, and specialized professional roles. Sponsorship is most common through the EB-1B outstanding researcher category and EB-2 advanced degree pathways. Not every position qualifies, so it is worth confirming sponsorship eligibility directly with the hiring department before accepting an offer.
Which roles and departments at University of Illinois typically receive Green Card sponsorship?
Tenure-track and tenured faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and senior research scientists receive Green Card sponsorship most consistently. Departments in engineering, the sciences, medicine, and technology tend to file more frequently given the demand for specialized talent. Administrative and support roles are sponsored less often and usually require exceptional circumstances to qualify.
How do I navigate the Green Card application process at University of Illinois?
The process typically begins with your department and the university's international services office determining the appropriate Green Card category. For most academic hires, this means either PERM labor certification followed by an I-140 petition, or a direct I-140 under EB-1B or NIW. The university's immigration team handles the employer-side filings, but you will need to provide supporting documentation throughout.
How long does the Green Card process take at University of Illinois?
Timelines depend on the Green Card category and your country of birth. PERM labor certification alone can take a year or more before the I-140 petition is even filed. If you were born in India or China, priority date backlogs can add years to the wait. EB-1B and NIW cases skip PERM and typically move faster, making them worth pursuing if you qualify.
How do I find Green Card jobs at University of Illinois?
Search for open positions directly on the University of Illinois careers portal and look for roles in research, faculty, and technical departments where sponsorship is most common. Migrate Mate is a useful tool for identifying University of Illinois roles tied to verified sponsorship history, helping you prioritize applications where a Green Card pathway is realistic rather than just possible.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at University of Illinois?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
