Job Roles at University of Rochester
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in University of Rochester Green Card Visa Sponsorship Jobs USA
Target research and faculty roles first
University of Rochester's strongest Green Card activity clusters around research, faculty, and highly specialized technical positions. Prioritize these departments when applying, as academic and research roles align most naturally with the EB-2 and EB-3 categories universities typically use.
Understand the PERM labor certification process
Most employer-sponsored Green Cards at universities begin with PERM, where the university advertises the role to prove no qualified U.S. worker is available. Expect this step to take several months before your I-140 petition can be filed.
Ask about sponsorship policy during the offer stage
University of Rochester handles Green Card decisions at the department and HR level. Raise sponsorship directly during offer negotiations, not after you've started. Waiting until onboarding makes the conversation significantly harder to initiate.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring roles
Not every open role at the University of Rochester will come with Green Card sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, saving you from applying to positions where sponsorship is unlikely to be offered.
Align your application with EB-2 or EB-3 eligibility
University roles often qualify under EB-2 for positions requiring an advanced degree or EB-3 for professional roles. Knowing which category fits your background before conversations begin helps you and HR move forward without delays or misaligned expectations.
Build tenure in your role before requesting sponsorship
Universities generally prefer to sponsor employees who have demonstrated value and institutional fit. Establishing a strong performance record at University of Rochester before formally requesting Green Card sponsorship significantly improves the likelihood of departmental approval.

Does University of Rochester sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, University of Rochester sponsors Green Card visas for eligible employees. As a research university operating in a highly specialized labor market, Rochester supports permanent residency for faculty, researchers, and select professional staff. Sponsorship is typically initiated by the hiring department and processed through the university's HR and legal teams on a case-by-case basis.
Which roles and departments at University of Rochester are most likely to receive Green Card sponsorship?
Green Card sponsorship at University of Rochester is most common in research, academic faculty, and specialized technical or scientific roles. Departments within the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the River Campus colleges, and research centers tend to be the most active. Administrative and general professional roles are less frequently sponsored, though exceptions exist for hard-to-fill positions.
How does the Green Card application process work at University of Rochester?
The process typically begins with PERM labor certification, where the university conducts a formal recruitment effort to demonstrate no qualified U.S. worker is available for the role. Once PERM is approved, the university files an I-140 immigrant petition on your behalf. After approval, you either adjust status within the U.S. or complete consular processing abroad to receive your Green Card.
How long does Green Card sponsorship take at University of Rochester?
The full process from PERM filing to Green Card approval commonly takes two to four years, though your priority date and country of birth significantly affect the timeline. Applicants born in countries with high demand for employment-based visas, such as India or China, may face substantially longer waits due to visa backlogs. Starting the process early in your employment is strongly advisable.
How do I improve my chances of receiving Green Card sponsorship at University of Rochester?
Position yourself in roles the university has historically sponsored, particularly research and faculty positions, and raise the topic of sponsorship during offer negotiations rather than after you've started. Migrate Mate can help you identify open University of Rochester roles with verified sponsorship history, so you're applying where sponsorship is a realistic outcome from the start.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at University of Rochester?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
