Align your practice area with Cooley's core sectors
Cooley's H-1B sponsorship concentrates in technology transactions, life sciences, and venture capital work. Frame your experience around these practice groups when applying. Attorneys whose background maps cleanly to an active Cooley department move through sponsorship conversations faster than generalists.
Verify your role qualifies as a specialty occupation
H-1B eligibility requires your position to demand a specific bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. For legal roles at Cooley, confirm the job description specifies a J.D. or relevant advanced degree. Review the occupation definition in O*NET before your interview.
Request an explicit sponsorship commitment before accepting
Large law firms sometimes offer roles without confirming sponsorship scope upfront. Before signing an offer, ask Cooley's recruiting team in writing whether the position includes H-1B filing fees and whether premium processing is standard for your start date. Assumptions here cause delays.
Use Migrate Mate to find Cooley's verified LCA filing history
Migrate Mate surfaces Cooley's Labor Condition Application data by role and office, so you can see which positions and locations have active H-1B filings. Use that data to target your application toward departments and offices with a documented sponsorship track record.
Prepare for prevailing wage documentation early
Cooley must certify your offered salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for your role and work location before filing your H-1B petition. Cross-check your expected compensation against the OFLC Wage Search for your specific legal occupation and metropolitan area before negotiations close.
Account for the H-1B cap lottery in your start date planning
If you're not already in H-1B status, Cooley can only file your petition during the annual April registration window, with an October 1 start date if selected. Coordinate your transition timeline with Cooley's immigration counsel well before the March registration period opens each year.
Cooley LLP H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cooley LLP sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Cooley LLP sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying roles across its U.S. offices. Sponsorship is most common for attorney positions in practice groups aligned with the firm's core sectors, including technology, life sciences, and corporate law. Eligibility depends on the specific role meeting the H-1B specialty occupation standard, which requires a directly related degree.
Which departments at Cooley LLP typically receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at Cooley most commonly supports attorneys in technology transactions, emerging companies, life sciences, and capital markets. Business professional staff in roles requiring specialized degrees, such as certain finance or compliance positions, may also be eligible. Roles in general administrative or support functions that don't require a specific degree are less likely to qualify.
How do I start the H-1B sponsorship process at Cooley LLP?
The process begins when Cooley's HR or recruiting team confirms the role is eligible for H-1B sponsorship. From there, outside immigration counsel files the Labor Condition Application with DOL, then submits the I-129 petition to USCIS. If you're subject to the cap, registration happens in March, with the petition filed in April if selected.
How long does the H-1B process take at a law firm like Cooley?
Standard USCIS processing for an H-1B petition takes several months after the petition filing date. Law firms like Cooley often use premium processing to reduce adjudication time significantly, though that decision is typically made case by case. Budget for the full cap-subject timeline if your petition needs to go through the annual lottery before filing.
How do I find open H-1B roles at Cooley LLP?
Migrate Mate shows Cooley's verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filings by job title and office location, giving you a clear picture of where active sponsorship is happening. Cross-reference that data with Cooley's careers page to identify open positions in practice groups with a documented filing history before applying.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Cooley LLP?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
