Verify your role meets specialty occupation requirements
H-1B eligibility at UNC Health depends on your job requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Use O*NET to confirm your occupation's educational requirements before applying, so your credentials clearly align with the posted role.
Target clinical departments with consistent sponsorship history
UNC Health's H-1B sponsorship concentrates in clinical medicine, nursing, and allied health rather than administrative roles. Focus your search on physician, advanced practice, and specialized clinical positions where the employer already has established sponsorship workflows and legal resources in place.
Check your prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Your offered salary must meet the DOL's prevailing wage for your role and location. Run your occupation code through OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer so you know the minimum USCIS will accept, and you're not blindsided by an LCA that fails wage certification.
Confirm UNC Health's E-Verify enrollment during screening
STEM OPT extensions and cap-exempt petition timing both depend on whether your employer participates in E-Verify. Ask your UNC Health recruiter to confirm enrollment status early in the process, not after an offer is signed, since this affects your authorization continuity between OPT and H-1B.
Use Migrate Mate to track UNC Health's LCA filing history
Before accepting an offer, verify that UNC Health has filed Labor Condition Applications for your specific occupation. Migrate Mate surfaces DOL LCA filing data by employer and role, so you can confirm sponsorship is realistic for your job title before investing time in the interview process.
File for premium processing if your start date is firm
Standard H-1B adjudication can extend well past your intended start date. If UNC Health allows it, request premium processing through USCIS to get a decision within a defined window, which matters most when you're transitioning off OPT or coordinating a credential-verification timeline with a state licensing board.
UNC Health H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does UNC Health sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, UNC Health sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying clinical and healthcare roles. As a major academic health system, it has established processes for supporting international physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals through the H-1B petition process. Sponsorship is most consistent for specialty occupation roles in direct patient care and clinical research.
Which roles and departments at UNC Health typically receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at UNC Health is most common in clinical medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health specialties. Physician and advanced practice roles, including those tied to UNC's academic medical programs, are among the most frequently sponsored. Administrative and non-clinical positions are less likely to qualify for H-1B sponsorship under the specialty occupation standard.
How do I apply for a job at UNC Health if I need H-1B sponsorship?
Apply directly through UNC Health's careers portal and indicate your need for sponsorship in your application or during the initial recruiter screen. Before applying, use Migrate Mate to review UNC Health's LCA filing history for your specific occupation, so you can confirm that sponsorship for your role type is realistic before the interview process begins.
How long does the H-1B process take at UNC Health?
The full H-1B timeline at UNC Health depends on several factors: LCA certification with DOL typically takes seven business days, and USCIS standard processing can take several months after that. If your start date is time-sensitive, ask whether UNC Health will support premium processing, which accelerates the USCIS adjudication window significantly.
What can I do to strengthen my H-1B sponsorship chances at UNC Health?
Focus on roles where your degree field directly matches the job description, since USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation alignment closely in healthcare. Confirm your credentials meet any state licensure requirements before the offer stage, as UNC Health's HR and legal teams will need completed credentialing documentation to file your LCA and H-1B petition without delays.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at UNC Health?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
