Overview
Come join Payroll Tax Operations (PTO) as a senior payroll tax expert and Subject Matter Expert (SME) on a team responsible for the end-to-end resolution of payroll tax issues across Notices, Corrections, and Amendments. The Staff Payroll Tax Processor is a technical lead and catalyst for the team, spending significant time as a resource for less experienced staff while independently owning the most complex cases in the queue. We are looking for a driven, expert-level payroll tax professional with a passion for solving hard problems, building team capability, and continuously improving the processes that deliver for our customers.
This role is primarily about fixing payroll tax problems, not running payroll. The Staff Payroll Tax Processor resolves complex State and Federal tax notices, prepares and files amended returns across multiple states, corrects multi-period payroll tax errors, and ensures that the knowledge to resolve those issues gets transferred to the team. Candidates whose experience is concentrated in payroll processing rather than tax defect resolution will not be the right fit.
Responsibilities
- Resolve the most complex State and Federal payroll tax notices in the team's queue, including multi-quarter, multi-state, and penalty assessment scenarios, owning the full case lifecycle from intake and root-cause analysis through agency response, submission, and confirmed closure.
- Prepare and file amended Federal and State payroll tax returns (Form 941-X and state equivalents) across 10+ states end-to-end, including reconciliation to the original return, recomputed liability schedules, W-2c preparation, and SSA reconciliation.
- Diagnose and resolve payroll tax errors spanning multiple pay periods or jurisdictions; trace discrepancies to the originating payroll run, determine tax impact across all affected quarters, and drive the complete correction workflow to confirmed resolution.
- Maintain high productivity case resolution, resolving customer Correction, Amendment, and Notice resolution requests with high accuracy.
- Monitor team WIP daily; identify aging cases, stuck holds, and Known Issues (KIs); resolve barriers proactively and bring systemic blockers to M1 with root-cause analysis and a recommended resolution path.
- Serve as the primary real-time resource for Senior Payroll Tax Processors, answering questions via Slack, Zoom, and side-by-side sessions while teaching the resolution process so the team builds capability, not dependency.
- Conduct structured coaching sessions at least once per quarter with each assigned team member using the SBIC feedback model; increase frequency for agents who are underperforming or working through a learning gap.
- Contribute to team huddles, group QA sessions, and process meetings.
- Author, review, and approve SOPs and Knowledge Base (KB) articles for core processes; identify recurring error patterns in QA data and bring corrective action recommendations to M1.
- Identify trends and emerging compliance issues; communicate findings to M1 and relevant stakeholders with a recommended response; drive implementation of resolutions.
- Support cross-functional collaboration with Corrections, Amendments, Pay & File, and Tax Notice teams to resolve interconnected customer issues end-to-end.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of payroll tax experience with a demonstrated focus on tax defect resolution for notice response, amended return preparation, and payroll error correction across multiple states.
- Expert knowledge of State and Federal payroll tax notice types; proven ability to independently draft penalty abatement requests and formal agency response letters with complete supporting documentation.
- Hands-on experience preparing and approving amended Federal (Form 941-X, W-2c) and State payroll tax returns across all states, including jurisdictions with complex local requirements such as PA, OH, and more.
- Deep knowledge of federal payroll tax law: FICA, FUTA, FITW, employment tax deposit schedules, and associated penalty and interest structures.
- Multi-state payroll tax expertise: reciprocal agreements, resident and nonresident taxation, SUI account management, and local tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Prior experience functioning as a lead, senior specialist, or SME; able to provide specific examples of coaching or training junior staff through complex resolution scenarios.
- Deep knowledge of federal and state tax payment and filing regulations across all US jurisdictions; advanced Excel skills for reconciliation and audit trail work.
- Strong written communication skills; SOPs and KB articles must be accurate, actionable, and written for a Tax processor audience without requiring revision.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred; expected within 18 months of Staff Payroll Tax Processor placement. FPC accepted for candidates with 5+ years of demonstrated tax defect resolution experience. Enrolled Agent (EA) is a strong differentiator.
- Experience at a payroll service bureau, PEO, or multi-client payroll tax operations environment strongly preferred.

Align your credentials to CPA requirements early
Intuit's Tax Senior roles consistently require or strongly prefer CPA licensure. If your credential was earned outside the U.S., confirm your state board accepts foreign transcripts for CPA reciprocity before you start applying.
Target Intuit's seasonal hiring windows strategically
Intuit ramps Tax Senior hiring ahead of tax season and fiscal-year planning cycles. Applications submitted between August and October tend to land in front of hiring managers with active headcount, which matters when sponsorship approval timelines are involved.
Distinguish your E-3 eligibility before the offer stage
If you hold Australian citizenship, the E-3 visa moves significantly faster than H-1B and avoids the lottery entirely. Flag your nationality early in the recruiter conversation so Intuit's immigration team can route your case correctly from the start.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Tax Senior roles at Intuit
Intuit posts Tax Senior positions across multiple portals and internal boards, which makes tracking them inconsistent. Migrate Mate aggregates sponsor-verified openings so you can filter directly for Intuit roles that are open to visa sponsorship.
Prepare your DOL prevailing wage documentation proactively
For H-1B and PERM filings, DOL requires Intuit to certify your offered salary meets prevailing wage for your specific location. If you're negotiating compensation, understand that the wage level tied to your job duties affects the LCA, not just your offer letter.
Frame prior public accounting experience in specialty occupation terms
USCIS scrutinizes whether Tax Senior roles qualify as specialty occupations. Emphasize that your background requires application of theoretical and technical tax knowledge, specifically Big Four or regional firm experience reviewing complex returns, not just tax preparation volume.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Intuit sponsor H-1B visas for Tax Seniors?
Yes, Intuit sponsors H-1B visas for Tax Senior roles. The company has a dedicated immigration program and works with outside counsel to file H-1B petitions, including during the annual April cap season. Because H-1B selection is subject to a lottery, candidates with E-3 visa or TN visa eligibility may want to surface that early in the process to explore faster alternatives.
How do I apply for Tax Senior jobs at Intuit?
Apply directly through Intuit's careers site or find sponsor-verified openings through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles open to visa sponsorship. When applying, tailor your resume to reflect tax technical skills relevant to Intuit's product lines, including TurboTax and Lacerte. Recruiters screen heavily for CPA status and prior experience with individual or business return review at scale.
Which visa types does Intuit commonly use for Tax Senior hires?
Intuit sponsors across several categories for Tax Senior roles, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, J-1 visa for eligible exchange visitors, and Green Card pathways through EB-2 and EB-3. The right visa depends on your nationality, education, and how quickly you need authorization to start work.
What qualifications does Intuit expect for Tax Senior roles?
Intuit typically looks for CPA licensure or active CPA candidacy, along with several years of experience reviewing or preparing complex individual or business tax returns. A background in public accounting at a regional or national firm translates well. Roles supporting TurboTax's expert network may also require familiarity with software-assisted tax workflows and client-facing advisory under time pressure.
How do I handle the timing between a job offer and visa filing?
For H-1B transfers or cap-exempt filings, USCIS can issue a receipt notice within a few weeks, and you may be able to start once the petition is filed if you hold valid H-1B status. For new cap-subject H-1B cases, the April lottery means you may need to wait until October 1 to begin work. OPT candidates should confirm their remaining authorization window before accepting an offer with a delayed start date.
