Align your degree to Johnson Controls' specialty occupation standard
H-1B eligibility requires a degree in a directly related field. For Project Engineer roles at Johnson Controls, mechanical, electrical, or controls engineering degrees map cleanly. A general business or unrelated STEM degree will create friction in the USCIS review.
Target open requisitions listing PE licensure as preferred
Johnson Controls frequently lists Professional Engineer licensure as a preferred credential for Project Engineers. Candidates with an EIT designation or active PE study timeline stand out, signaling you're building toward the long-term credential the hiring team values.
Raise visa sponsorship after a technical interview, not before
Johnson Controls' engineering hiring teams evaluate technical fit first. Sponsorship conversations land better after you've cleared a technical screen and the hiring manager sees you as a viable candidate, not during the initial recruiter call.
Understand the LCA's prevailing wage obligation before negotiating salary
Before your H-1B petition, Johnson Controls must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL certifying your salary meets the prevailing wage for your location and role level. Knowing this floor helps you negotiate from an informed position rather than accepting the minimum.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Project Engineer roles by sponsorship type
Not every Johnson Controls requisition explicitly states which visa categories are supported. Use Migrate Mate to browse current Project Engineer openings filtered by the specific visa type you hold, saving time you'd otherwise spend screening job posts manually.

Find Project Engineer at Johnson Controls JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Project Engineers?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Project Engineers. The role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards because it typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or a related engineering discipline. Sponsorship is subject to the annual H-1B cap and lottery, so timing your job search around the April filing window matters if you're starting from scratch rather than transferring an existing H-1B.
How do I apply for Project Engineer jobs at Johnson Controls?
Applications go through the Johnson Controls careers portal, where Project Engineer roles are listed by region and business unit. Tailoring your resume to highlight project lifecycle experience, building systems knowledge, or controls familiarity will strengthen your application. You can also use Migrate Mate to find current Project Engineer openings at Johnson Controls filtered by the visa sponsorship type you need, which speeds up identifying the right requisitions.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls commonly use for Project Engineer roles?
Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas as the primary work visa for Project Engineers, along with TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose engineering roles fall under the TN occupation list. F-1 OPT and CPT are supported for students and recent graduates, and Johnson Controls participates in E-Verify, which is required for STEM OPT extensions. Longer-term, the company also files EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions for sponsored employees.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for sponsored Project Engineer candidates?
Johnson Controls typically looks for a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, systems, or controls engineering. For sponsored roles, the degree field matters more than usual because it must substantiate the H-1B specialty occupation requirement under USCIS review. Practical experience with HVAC systems, building automation, fire suppression, or industrial controls strengthens your candidacy significantly. EIT designation or progress toward a PE license is a differentiator in competitive markets.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take at a company like Johnson Controls?
From offer acceptance to an approved H-1B, plan for a minimum of three to six months if you file with premium processing, which USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days. Without premium processing, standard adjudication runs several months. Cap-subject H-1B petitions can only be filed once per year, with an April 1 filing date for an October 1 start, so a missed lottery means waiting a full year before the next cycle.
