Align your credentials to U.S. construction standards
Johnson Controls construction roles often require licensure or certification recognized in the U.S., such as PMP or OSHA credentials. Get foreign qualifications evaluated by a NACES-accredited agency before applying so your experience translates clearly to hiring managers.
Target roles tied to building systems projects
Johnson Controls hires construction talent specifically for HVAC, fire suppression, and building automation projects. Search for titles like project engineer or construction manager within their fire and security or HVAC divisions, where international sponsorship activity is strongest.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsoring roles
Many construction postings at large manufacturers list sponsorship eligibility inconsistently. Use Migrate Mate to browse Johnson Controls construction openings that are confirmed for visa sponsorship, saving time you'd otherwise spend screening roles that won't move forward.
Start OPT or CPT applications before your graduation date
If you're on an F-1 visa, USCIS requires OPT authorization to be in place before you begin work. Apply for EAD through your DSO at least 90 days before your program ends so there's no gap between graduation and your start date at Johnson Controls.
Ask recruiters directly about LCA and H-1B cap timing
Johnson Controls operates on standard H-1B cap timelines, meaning petitions file in April for an October start. During interviews, ask whether your target role can be structured to fit that window or whether a cap-exempt pathway like OPT extension applies to your situation.
Build a project portfolio around infrastructure and M&E systems
Johnson Controls construction teams work on mechanical, electrical, and building automation systems. Document past projects involving those systems with scope, budget, and outcome details. Reviewers in manufacturing-adjacent construction companies respond to evidence of systems-level project delivery, not just general site experience.

Find Construction at Johnson Controls JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Construction roles?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Construction positions. These roles typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards when they require at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as civil, mechanical, or construction management. Sponsorship is subject to the annual H-1B cap, so offer timing relative to the April filing window matters significantly.
How do I apply for Construction jobs at Johnson Controls?
Applications go through the Johnson Controls careers portal, where you can filter by job family and location. For international candidates, Migrate Mate surfaces Construction openings at Johnson Controls that are tagged for visa sponsorship eligibility, helping you focus on roles most likely to move forward. Tailor your resume to reflect building systems or infrastructure project experience relevant to their core business lines.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls commonly use for Construction hires?
Johnson Controls sponsors across several visa categories for Construction roles, including H-1B for specialty occupation workers, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering and technical roles, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, and J-1 for trainees or interns. For longer-term hires, the company also pursues EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for sponsored Construction positions?
Most sponsored Construction roles at Johnson Controls require a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with building systems such as HVAC, fire protection, or building automation is a strong differentiator. Project management credentials like PMP and U.S.-recognized safety certifications, including OSHA 30, strengthen an application for site-level roles.
How do I handle the timeline between a job offer and my visa start date?
If you're transitioning to H-1B status, work cannot begin until October 1 of the cap year your petition covers, even with an earlier approval. For F-1 OPT holders, you can start once your EAD is valid and employment is authorized by your DSO. Align offer negotiations around these windows early so Johnson Controls and your recruiter can structure the hire to fit your authorization timeline.
