Align your credentials to DOL specialty occupation standards
Project Controls Engineer roles require a degree in engineering, construction management, or a closely related field. Review DOL's specialty occupation criteria before applying so your resume reflects the direct degree-to-role connection USCIS scrutinizes at petition review.
Target Johnson Controls' capital project divisions specifically
Johnson Controls staffs Project Controls Engineers most heavily in its large facilities, fire, and HVAC system delivery programs. Filtering your search to construction or project delivery business units sharpens your fit and improves your chances of landing a sponsorship-eligible requisition.
Use Migrate Mate to find open roles across Johnson Controls
Johnson Controls posts Project Controls Engineer positions across multiple business units and locations. Use Migrate Mate to browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're only applying to roles where the hiring team is already set up to sponsor.
Clarify OPT or CPT timing before accepting an offer
If you're on F-1 status, confirm whether the role qualifies for STEM OPT extension before signing. Project Controls Engineering typically qualifies, but your DSO needs to verify your degree is on the official STEM Designated Degree Program list.
Ask recruiters about PERM timing during late-stage interviews
Johnson Controls supports employment-based Green Card filings for long-term hires. Asking when PERM recruitment typically begins for this role signals seriousness and gives you realistic data for planning your immigration timeline beyond the initial H-1B period.
Request confirmation of cap-subject H-1B filing timelines
If you need a new H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. Confirm with Johnson Controls' HR team that your offer and onboarding timeline accounts for this window so there's no gap in your work authorization.

Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Project Controls Engineers?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Project Controls Engineers. The role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards because it requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field. If you need a cap-subject H-1B, your offer timing needs to align with the USCIS registration window that opens each March.
How do I apply for Project Controls Engineer jobs at Johnson Controls?
Applications go through Johnson Controls' careers portal at johnsoncontrols.com. You can also find visa-sponsorship-eligible Project Controls Engineer postings on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles where sponsorship is available. Tailor your resume to reflect project scheduling tools like Primavera P6 or MS Project, cost control experience, and EPC or systems delivery project background, as those align with what Johnson Controls' hiring teams prioritize.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls support for Project Controls Engineers?
Johnson Controls supports several visa categories for this role, including H-1B, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals in engineering classifications), F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, J-1 for training or exchange placements, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and where you are in your immigration journey.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for Project Controls Engineer roles?
Johnson Controls typically expects a bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a related technical discipline. Hands-on experience with project scheduling software such as Primavera P6, earned value management, cost forecasting, and progress reporting is standard. Roles supporting larger capital or systems delivery programs may also expect familiarity with EPC contracting structures and cross-functional project team coordination.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take after receiving an offer from Johnson Controls?
Timeline depends on your visa category. H-1B transfers for candidates already in H-1B status can allow you to start within weeks of filing. New cap-subject H-1B cases require USCIS registration in March and a start date no earlier than October 1. PERM-based Green Card filings typically take one to two years from initiation through labor certification, with additional time for the I-140 and adjustment of status stages.
