Align your portfolio to KBR's domain
KBR's software engineering work leans heavily on systems integration, government contracts, and industrial infrastructure. Frame your resume and project examples around embedded systems, large-scale platform engineering, or regulated environments rather than consumer product development.
Target roles tied to government contracts
KBR's open senior engineering positions often support defense or federal programs, which can affect sponsorship eligibility. Before applying, check whether a role has security clearance requirements, since those can complicate or delay H-1B sponsorship for foreign nationals.
Verify your degree field maps to the role
For H-1B specialty occupation approval, USCIS requires your degree to directly correspond to the job. A software engineering title at KBR backed by a Computer Science or Software Engineering degree is straightforward; a general IT background or unrelated field may face an RFE.
Understand the PERM timeline for permanent sponsorship
KBR has filed EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorships for engineering roles, meaning PERM labor certification is part of the process. DOL's PERM process typically adds 12 to 18 months before an I-140 can be filed, so factor that into your long-term planning when evaluating an offer.
Search for KBR openings on Migrate Mate
KBR lists Senior Software Engineering roles across multiple locations, and not all are equally sponsorship-friendly. Use Migrate Mate to filter KBR's open positions specifically by visa sponsorship type so you spend time only on roles with a documented sponsorship history.
Negotiate offer timing around the H-1B cap cycle
If you need a new H-1B and aren't cap-exempt, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start. If you receive a KBR offer outside that window, discuss cap-gap coverage or a conditional start date with the recruiter before signing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does KBR sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineers?
KBR does sponsor work visas for Senior Software Engineering roles, and H-1B visa is the most common nonimmigrant path for this function. That said, some KBR positions are tied to U.S. government contracts that carry security clearance requirements, which can limit or complicate H-1B sponsorship. Confirming clearance requirements early in the process saves time for both you and the hiring team.
How do I apply for Senior Software Engineering jobs at KBR?
Applications go through KBR's careers portal at kbr.com. Roles are posted by business unit and location, so filtering by function and geography gets you to relevant listings faster. You can also browse KBR's Senior Software Engineering openings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles with a confirmed visa sponsorship history so you're not applying blind on sponsorship eligibility.
Which visa types does KBR typically use for Senior Software Engineering roles?
For nonimmigrant sponsorship, the H-1B is the standard path for Senior Software Engineers at KBR. On the immigrant side, KBR has pursued both EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for engineering talent, which involves PERM labor certification filed with the DOL followed by an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. The path offered depends on your qualifications and the specific role.
What qualifications and experience does KBR expect for Senior Software Engineering roles?
KBR's senior engineering roles typically require a bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field, plus several years of hands-on experience. Given KBR's focus on defense, government services, and industrial systems, experience with systems integration, mission-critical software, or regulated environments carries significant weight. Familiarity with DevSecOps practices or government IT frameworks is a practical differentiator.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take at KBR?
For H-1B sponsorship, KBR must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting Form I-129 to USCIS. Standard USCIS processing runs three to six months; premium processing cuts that to 15 business days. For Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3, the PERM process alone typically takes 12 to 18 months, with additional time for the I-140 and, for many nationalities, the visa queue after that.
