Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
MaineHealth requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before any sponsorship conversation begins. Have your certification active and your USMLE steps complete so hiring managers can move quickly once they identify you as a fit.
Target MaineHealth's outpatient psychiatry openings
MaineHealth consistently posts psychiatry roles across its behavioral health and outpatient clinics, not just inpatient hospital units. Roles in community mental health settings often have longer recruitment timelines, giving you more runway to complete sponsorship paperwork before a start date.
Clarify J-1 waiver status with your recruiter early
Many international psychiatrists enter the U.S. on J-1 exchange visas and carry a two-year home residency requirement. Confirm with MaineHealth's HR team whether they support Conrad 30 waiver applications, since this directly shapes which visa pathway you'll pursue.
Align your offer letter timeline with H-1B cap deadlines
If you need a cap-subject H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March and employment cannot begin before October 1. Work backward from that date when negotiating your start date with MaineHealth so neither side is caught off guard.
Use Migrate Mate to filter MaineHealth psychiatry listings by visa type
Not every MaineHealth psychiatry posting explicitly states which visas are supported. Search by role and sponsorship type on Migrate Mate to surface the open positions where H-1B, TN, or OPT sponsorship is confirmed before you apply.
Request the LCA before signing your offer
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL certifying your wage meets prevailing standards before USCIS can process an H-1B petition. Ask MaineHealth's HR team to confirm LCA filing is in progress so there are no delays after you accept.

Find Psychiatrist at MaineHealth JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does MaineHealth sponsor H-1B visas for Psychiatrists?
Yes, MaineHealth sponsors H-1B visas for Psychiatrist roles. The process involves your employer filing a Labor Condition Application with the DOL and then submitting an I-129 petition to USCIS on your behalf. If you're subject to the H-1B cap, sponsorship must be coordinated around the annual March registration window, with employment beginning no earlier than October 1.
How do I apply for Psychiatrist jobs at MaineHealth?
You can search for open Psychiatrist positions through MaineHealth's careers portal or browse verified sponsoring listings on Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa type so you can confirm sponsorship before applying. When you apply, highlight your ECFMG certification, active state licensure or eligibility in Maine, and any board certification in psychiatry, as these are standard screening criteria.
Which visa types does MaineHealth commonly use for Psychiatrist hires?
MaineHealth sponsors H-1B visas for most physician hires, including Psychiatrists, and also supports J-1 visa holders through Conrad 30 waiver arrangements for those completing residency on exchange visas. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying physician roles. F-1 OPT and CPT are less common for fully licensed Psychiatrists but may apply during fellowship training.
What qualifications does MaineHealth expect for Psychiatrist candidates?
MaineHealth typically requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, completion of an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency, and eligibility for Maine medical licensure. Board certification or eligibility through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is standard. Subspecialty training in areas such as child and adolescent psychiatry or addiction medicine can strengthen your candidacy for specific openings across their behavioral health network.
How long does the sponsorship and onboarding process take for a Psychiatrist role?
From offer acceptance to start date, the process typically takes three to six months for H-1B transfers or cap-exempt filings, and up to twelve months or longer if you're navigating a cap-subject H-1B registration cycle. J-1 Conrad 30 waiver processing through the State of Maine adds additional lead time. Factor in Maine medical licensure processing, credentialing, and hospital privileging on top of the visa timeline.
